We have an amazing opportunity for an IR Consultant to be based in Durban, Umhlanga. Do you think you have what it takes to be our newest Purple Star?

The IR Consultant provides operational, advisory and administrative industrial relations support to the business nationally, under the direction of the IR Manager. The role supports the consistent application of employment legislation, Group policies and procedures, and provides support to Management and the HR team with disciplinary matters, grievances, performance related processes, CCMA matters, appeals, training and IR/HR projects. The incumbent is expected to manage assigned matters independently within the approved scope of authority and to escalate complex, high-risk or precedent-setting matters to the IR Manager.

You Bring

  • 2-3 years of IR experience or other relevant experience in an IR/HR environment.
  • Knowledgeable in Labour Legislation (EEA, BCEA, LRA)
  • Manual Driver’s Licence or Own vehicle

  • Bachelor’s Degree/Diploma qualification.

What You’ll Do For The Brand

  • Understand and apply a broad range of employment law principles, including the BCEA, LRA and EEA, and provide support to the business nationally in accordance with the direction, standards and escalation requirements set by the IR Manager.

Industrial Relations Strategy and Operational Support

  • Support the IR Manager in implementing industrial relations strategies, policies, standards and initiatives aligned to business requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve IR processes, controls and service delivery, and submit recommendations to the IR Manager.
  • Provide operational guidance and support to Management and the HR team on IR matters, escalating complex, high-risk or precedent-setting matters when required.
  • Operate independently within the assigned scope of authority and agreed service levels.

Employee Relations Advisory

  • Provide advice and support to the HR team, Supervisors, Line Managers, and Team Members on disciplinary, grievance, incapacity and performance related matters.
  • Guide stakeholders on the correct interpretation and application of IR policies, procedures, the disciplinary code and relevant labour legislation.
  • Prepare detailed written advice and reports on complex matters and escalate to the IR Manager or HR Manager when required.
  • Maintain constructive and professional support relationships with Line Managers, Supervisors, Team Leaders, HR and other stakeholders.

Dispute Resolution and Case Management

  • Draft disciplinary sanctions nationally through the centralised IR portal, including verbal, written and final written warnings, ensuring alignment with the disciplinary code and consistent application.
  • Ensure disciplinary hearings are scheduled nationally, with dates and times confirmed and all relevant parties to be notified accordingly.
  • Conduct or support pre-hearing investigations into alleged misconduct, grievances, complaints and other employee-relations matters when required.
  • Assist with the preparation of disciplinary hearings, appeals, conciliation and arbitration cases, including collation and quality review of supporting evidence and documentation.
  • Liaise with the IR service provider regarding documentation for disciplinary enquiries and query outcomes that are not aligned with the disciplinary code or evidence presented.
  • Monitor disciplinary hearing processes and provide guidance to chairpersons to support procedural and substantive fairness, consistency and compliance.
  • Ensure the correct and complete preparation, issue, signature, filing and recording of all IR documentation.
  • Ensure proper logistics for CCMA matters, including liaison with CCMA Case Managers and the IR service provider, case preparation, dates, times and calendar invitations.
  • Discuss CCMA conciliation and arbitration matters telephonically with the IR service provider to support effective case management and, where appropriate, resolution.

Policy Development and Legislative Compliance

  • Assist with the review and updating of Group policies, procedures, templates and the disciplinary code to maintain alignment with legislative requirements and best practice.
  • Keep abreast of developments, legislative changes and emerging trends in industrial and employee relations, and communicate relevant updates through the appropriate channels.
  • Support compliance with South African labour legislation and applicable internal governance requirements.
  • Assist with labour-compliance activities relating to the opening and closing of branches, including contracts, secondments, translations, retrenchments and related processes, as assigned by the IR Manager.

Training and Development

  • Assist with the development of IR guidance material and training content.
  • Deliver or support IR and employee-relations training to the HR team, Line Managers and Team Members where required.
  • Coach and guide stakeholders on practical application of IR processes, documentation and policy requirements within the Consultant’s scope of expertise.

System Administration and Reporting

  • Draft required IR documents, and ensure the team follow up on issued documents, attach signed documents and record accurate information on the Oracle system.
  • Conduct audits on the IR Service Portal and related systems, including the IR Share Drive, to ensure that case information is current, complete and accurate, thereby ensuring orderly and confidential IR records in accordance with internal requirements.
  • Manage the IR inbox and ensure that queries and requests are attended to timeously and professionally.
  • Report disciplinary statistics daily and prepare weekly, monthly and ad hoc reports as required.

External Stakeholders and Supplier Administration

  • Liaise professionally with IR service providers, the CCMA and other external stakeholders where applicable and within delegated authority.
  • Manage supplier invoicing and payment administration, including follow-up and recordkeeping.

Projects and Initiatives

  • Support IR, HR and business projects and initiatives identified by the IR Manager, including initiatives that improve compliance, service delivery and workplace culture.
  • Perform ad hoc duties and projects reasonably related to the role.
