About The Role

The Market Manager is a localized multi-unit retail leader responsible for delivering sales growth, operational excellence, customer experience, and talent development across an assigned market of approximately 4-5 stores, while continuing to directly lead one Market Anchor Store.
The Market Manager is accountable for both Anchor Store performance and assigned market outcomes, including sales results, customer experience, execution standards, coaching quality, operational consistency, talent development, and leadership bench strength. The Market Anchor Store serves as the market leadership, training, and execution hub for General Managers, Assistant Managers, Supervisors, and high-potential leaders.
Specifically, You Will
Market and Anchor Store Leadership
- Lead the assigned Market Anchor Store as a high-performing, standard-setting location that models strong sales routines, operational discipline, customer experience, talent development, and brand execution.
- Maintain direct accountability for the Anchor Store’s day-to-day performance, including sales, contribution, labour management, customer experience, merchandising, compliance, associate engagement, and expense control.
- Lead an assigned market cluster of approximately 4-5 stores by providing frequent coaching, follow-up, and execution support to store leaders within the market.
Sales Growth and Customer Experience
- Drive sales performance across the Anchor Store and assigned market by reinforcing customer-first behaviours, sales routines, conversion opportunities, basket-building behaviours, services attachment, and referral-based business development.
- Identify sales gaps, customer experience opportunities, and priority stores requiring targeted support, then build practical action plans with store leaders.
- Model and reinforce Staples’ selling expectations by coaching leaders and associates on customer engagement, solution selling, referral generation, and cross-channel opportunities.
- Support execution of sales programs, promotional events, business development opportunities, and customer-facing initiatives in partnership with RSMs and other field support leaders.
Operational Excellence and Execution
- Ensure consistent execution of brand standards, merchandising standards, planograms, promotional readiness, inventory routines, task completion, health and safety expectations, asset protection routines, and privacy requirements across the Anchor Store and assigned market.
- Conduct regular store visits and operational walks focused on customer experience, selling culture, merchandising, AP compliance, H&S compliance, seasonal readiness, task execution, and operational standards.
Talent Development, Coaching, and Succession
- Coach General Managers, Assistant Managers, Supervisors, and high-potential leaders within the assigned market through regular one-on-ones, store visits, observation, feedback, recognition, and action planning.
- Build capability across the market by using the Anchor Store as a training environment for leaders and future leaders.
- Partner with store leaders to identify talent gaps, succession opportunities, development plans, bench strength, and readiness for future roles.
Financial Management and Performance Analysis
- Monitor and analyze sales, margin, contribution, labour, customer experience, services performance, and operational dashboards for the Anchor Store and assigned market.
- Review P&L results, sales dashboards, labour dashboards, customer satisfaction reports, conversion reports, training reports, and other business metrics to identify gaps and opportunities.
- Partner with store leaders to build action plans that improve performance, address underperformance, maintain successes, and strengthen accountability.
Communication, Change Leadership, and Field Alignment
- Cascade priorities, updates, results, and action items to assigned store leaders in a clear, timely, and actionable way.
- Act as a change champion by translating corporate priorities into practical store-level action.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Partner with District Managers to ensure clear market alignment, shared accountability, and effective coordination across stores.
- Support regional initiatives, pilot programs, transformation work, and field implementation plans as required.
Some of what you need
- Successful completion of high school is preferred.
- Post-secondary education in business, retail management, operations, leadership, or a related field is considered an asset.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to understand sales, margin, contribution, labour, customer experience, and operational performance.
- Strong talent assessment and succession planning capability.
- Strong comfort with dashboards, scorecards, reports, Microsoft tools, and internal communication platforms.
- Ability to identify performance gaps, diagnose root causes, and build practical recovery plans.
- 7+ years of progressive retail leadership experience preferred.
- Previous General Manager, senior store leader, high-volume store leader, or equivalent multi-unit retail leadership experience preferred.
- Demonstrated accountability for sales, service, customer experience, operational execution, labour management, and financial performance.
- Proven experience coaching leaders, developing talent, building succession plans, and improving performance through follow-up and accountability.
- Experience leading through change, executing company initiatives, and partnering cross-functionally with field and support teams.
- Strong understanding of multi- store or big box retail store operations, merchandising, labour, AP, H&S, customer experience, services, and sales execution.
Physical demands/working conditions
- Field-based retail leadership role.
- Regular presence required in the Market Anchor Store with regular travel required to assigned market stores.
- Schedule flexibility required to support store visits, peak periods, business needs, training, meetings, and urgent operational issues.
