About The Role

The Medical Coder is responsible for translating medical diagnoses, procedures, and services into standardized codes for billing and documentation purposes. This role ensures accuracy and compliance with coding guidelines and regulations.

Technical

  • Review and analyse patient records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures.
  • Assign accurate ICD, CPT and HCPCS codes based on clinical documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, payer requirements and hospital policies.
  • Collaborate with physicians and healthcare providers to clarify diagnoses and treatments.
  • Resolve coding discrepancies and claim denials with the billing department.
  • Maintain the confidentiality and integrity of patient records.
  • Stay updated on coding standards, healthcare regulations and industry best practices.

Quality and Safety

  • Maintain service quality and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Comply with all applicable safety and quality-control procedures.
  • Follow environmental safety and infection-control precautions.
  • Ensure safety procedures and quality-assurance standards are maintained.
  • Support clinical audits and submit reports as required.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families and healthcare personnel.

Continuous Education

  • Participate in staff education, induction, peer reviews, case studies and clinical presentations.
  • Participate in departmental programmes, committees and staff meetings.
  • Support the orientation and training of new employees.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through lectures, seminars and online learning.
  • Complete all licensing, certification and mandatory training requirements within the specified timelines.
  • Apply relevant technical knowledge of anatomy, physiology and related sciences.

Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems

  • Comply with all OSH and infection-control policies, standards and procedures.
  • Report hazards, incidents, near misses and safety concerns.
  • Assist in preparing risk assessments and incident reports.
  • Attend required OSH and infection-control training, awareness programmes and mock drills.
  • Follow safe working procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Understand emergency and evacuation procedures.
  • Avoid actions that could endanger the health and safety of others.
  • Follow waste-management procedures and promote waste reduction, reuse and recycling.
  • Participate in OSHMS audits and inspections.

Prevention and Control of Infection (PCI)

  • Read and comply with the NMC PCI Policy and Strategy.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness to minimise infection risks.
  • Strictly follow the five moments of hand hygiene.
  • Comply with the “bare below the elbows” requirement.
  • Maintain appropriate environmental hygiene and infection-control practices at all times.
  • Certification in medical coding (CPC, CCS, or equivalent).
  • In-depth knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Knowledge of hospital information systems and coding software.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Effective communication with clinical and administrative teams.
  • Self-motivated and able to work under pressure.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English; Arabic is an advantage.
  • Supportive and caring attitude.
  • Adaptable with good time-management skills.
  • Confident in handling stressful situations.
  • Proficient in IT applications.
