Orientation/Training

New team members are required to complete Sterile Processing orientation and training upon hire. Orientation includes department-specific education, hands-on training, and instruction on sterile processing standards, workflows, and regulatory requirements. Team members will work alongside an experienced preceptor throughout orientation to develop the skills and confidence needed to perform independently. Training focuses on instrument reprocessing, sterilization procedures, quality standards, documentation requirements, and supporting the needs of Surgical Services.

About the Department

The Sterile Processing Department is a fast -paced work environment. Upon hire Team Members are expected to attend a 90-day orientation. While on orientation techs will attend an SPD 101 class where educators will teach the Sterile Processing Department standard of work and regulations. Techs will also have a preceptor while on orientation. Technicians will assemble case carts according to surgery schedules. This will include sterile instrumentation according to patient procedure. When completed technicians will transport case cart to the OR and place in designated area. Depending on your hire site in Grand Rapids, Sterile Processing Departments can anticipate 40-90 surgical cases. Sites may include small differences but can expect the same job duties with expectations. Team members can also expect to wear surgical attire in the department.

About the Unit

The Sterile Processing Department supports a high-volume surgical services team and plays a critical role in patient care and safety. The Surgery Department includes 3 operating rooms, 2 endoscopy suites, a C-section room, and supports additional services including manometry and bronchoscopy.

This location is the busiest regional surgical site, performing approximately 200 more procedures per month than other top-performing regional hospitals. Team members support a wide variety of specialties including orthopedic, general surgery, OB/GYN, urology, dentistry, ear, nose and throat, and bariatric procedures. The Sterile Processing team works closely with Surgical Services to ensure instrumentation, supplies, and equipment are available and properly prepared to support quality patient care.

Scope of Work

Sterile Processing professionals are responsible for cleaning, decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, sterilizing, storing, and distributing medical and surgical instrumentation. They are among the most vital contributors to the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care. Work performed in the Sterile Processing Department follows a processing cycle that includes decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution. Technicians are responsible for preparing instrumentation and case carts according to surgical schedules and ensuring supplies are available when needed. Throughout the process, instruments and equipment must be inspected to verify cleanliness, functionality, and compliance with established standards. Sterile Processing Technicians are also responsible for maintaining accurate documentation, tracking instrumentation, monitoring sterilization processes, and supporting inventory management. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, organization, and a commitment to patient safety and quality.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent Required
• CBSPD Certified in Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) or HSPA/IAHCSMM Registered Central Service Technician certification required within 1 year and 6 months of hire
• Previous healthcare or Sterile Processing experience preferred
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail
• Ability to safely handle and transport instruments, supplies, and equipment
