About The Role

Are you ready to grow your career while helping shape the future of reliable and sustainable power generation? WSP Africa is seeking a driven and technically capable Thermal Engineer to join our Power and Energy business in Midrand or Cape Town. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside experienced specialists on diverse, high-impact energy projects across Southern Africa and internationally, while building valuable consulting and project-delivery experience.

In this role, you will contribute across the thermal power project lifecycle—from feasibility studies and development engineering to design support, construction monitoring, testing, commissioning and operational inspections. You will gain exposure to gas turbine, gas engine and coal-fired power projects, collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, and provide practical technical insight to clients, project developers, investors and other key stakeholders. If you are passionate about power generation, enjoy solving complex engineering challenges and want to develop your expertise within a respected global consultancy, this role offers an excellent platform to make a meaningful impact and accelerate your professional growth.

What you will do

  • Deliver high-quality technical advisory work for thermal-generation projects.
  • Support feasibility studies, functional designs, technical specifications and tender documentation.
  • Coordinate interfaces across mechanical, electrical, civil, and control and instrumentation disciplines.
  • Prepare technical reports, drawings, meeting minutes and stakeholder deliverables.
  • Provide engineering support during project execution, including technical queries, factory inspections, material testing and construction monitoring.
  • Support testing, commissioning, operational inspections and consultancy proposals.
  • Manage small to medium multidisciplinary engineering assignments under senior engineering guidance.

What we are looking for

  • BSc/BEng or BTech in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
  • Two to three years’ experience in thermal-generation power projects.
  • ECSA registration as a Candidate Engineer or Candidate Engineering Technologist; professional registration is advantageous.
  • Exposure to power plant modelling, design, construction supervision or commissioning is advantageous.
  • Experience in coal-fired power plants or technical advisory services to investors, project developers or banks will be beneficial.
  • Strong communication, technical report writing, coordination, time management and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30%, including within Africa.

Why WSP?

Join a diverse consulting organisation where you can collaborate with experienced specialists, contribute to complex energy projects and develop your technical capability across the thermal power plant lifecycle. WSP is committed to diversity and equity in employment and to maintaining a safe working environment
