About The Role

Job Summary

The Director of Technology sets enterprise-aligned strategic direction and serves as a senior technology leader who inspires, guides, and develops a team of leaders responsible for designing, delivering, and operating large-scale technology portfolios, services, and processes that enable AEP’s business. This role is accountable for driving cross-organization initiatives that improve business outcomes through technology modernization, resilience, security, and operational excellence. The scope of responsibility typically includes high-impact portfolios spanning major business systems, infrastructure platforms, or shared operational services, often requiring coordination across multiple business units, operating companies, and IT domains.

Job Description

What you’ll do

  • Leads the strategy and management of a technology or service portfolio with a multi-year roadmap, clear value outcomes, and measurable business impact; ensures a balanced plan across delivery speed, cost, risk, and long-term sustainability.
  • Provides executive-level leadership and presence: engages directly with senior leaders to shape priorities, frame trade-offs, and secure alignment on investment decisions; communicates complex technology decisions in business-relevant terms.
  • Leads large-scale, cross-organization initiatives that span teams and domains—driving alignment, removing barriers, resolving priority conflicts, and ensuring coordinated execution across multiple stakeholders.
  • Drives transformation of technology, operating model, and delivery practices, moving beyond “supporting” transformation to owning outcomes, adoption, and sustained improvements across portfolios and partner organizations.
  • Ensures technology/service delivery and operations meet commitments: projects and maintenance/KTLO activities are completed on schedule, with high quality, and deliver value to operating companies and business units, while improving reliability, performance, and customer experience.
  • Strengthens governance, standards, and architectural discipline at portfolio scale: ensures adherence to architectural standards, SDLC, security, coding/configuration, ITIL, and Agile/project practices; proactively identifies gaps and improves standards and adoption mechanisms to accelerate delivery without sacrificing integrity.
  • Owns portfolio financial stewardship at strategic level: manages budgets and investment allocation across competing priorities; drives cost transparency, total cost of ownership optimization, and value realization tracking for major initiatives.
  • Leads vendor and partner strategy: collaborates with procurement and vendors to negotiate favorable outcomes; governs partner performance, delivery health, and risk; ensures vendor engagements accelerate outcomes and do not introduce operational fragility.
  • Builds and develops high-performing teams: establishes a talent strategy; hires, coaches, and develops talent; drives performance management and succession planning; fosters an inclusive culture of accountability, continuous learning, and delivery excellence.
  • Partners across the enterprise to deliver outcomes: collaborates with operating companies, business units, internal IT partners, and third parties; drives alignment across teams to deliver consistent results and improve enterprise-wide technology effectiveness.
  • Fosters continuous improvement through Lean leadership behaviors and sponsorship of key initiatives to improve customer satisfaction, efficiency, quality, and reliability—scaling improvements across multiple teams and stakeholder groups.
  • Ensures compliance and risk management: ensures staff adherence to corporate/technology policies and procedures including architecture and security policies, disaster recovery, NERC CIP, and Sarbanes Oxley controls—while proactively reducing operational and regulatory risk across the portfolio.
