About The Role

American Express National Bank is American Express’ U.S. bank, representing more than 60% of the company’s revenues through consistent payments, financing, and savings products. The bank issues and underwrites most American Express products in the U.S. and is the only part of our company that accepts deposits from customers. The team supporting AENB (known as AENB HQ) is responsible for the administration of the bank’s programs and services. The team also serves as enterprise centers of excellence for governance and control functions in the first line of defense, meaning they help business unit teams manage risk in a more effective and efficient way.

As an intern, you will gain exposure to cross-function initiatives and executive-level decision making while working alongside leaders who shape the future of the AENB HQ. The Summer Intern will play a key supporting role within AENB HQ, gaining hands-on experience contributing to initiatives that strengthen business operations, governance, risk management, controls, reporting, and strategic execution.

Responsibilities Include

  • Support business, governance, risk, control, program management, and/or strategic initiatives across AENB HQ.
  • Support high priority cross-functional initiatives impacting multiple business units, including linkages and dependencies with groups both within and outside of AENB HQ.
  • Conduct research, gather and analyze information from a variety of sources, identify trends, and summarize insights to help inform business decisions.
  • Contribute to project planning, execution, tracking, reporting, and issue resolution in support of key team priorities.
  • Prepare clear communications, presentations, status updates, and other materials for team members, stakeholders, and leadership audiences.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, curiosity, and a willingness to learn in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Prepare and/or lead efficient and effective presentations and materials and break down complex ideas into understandable and actionable messages.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Finance, Economics, Business, Risk Management, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • Master's degree candidates with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and June 2028.
  • A keen interest in project management, risk management, and/or governance.
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present ideas clearly to diverse stakeholders.
  • Comfort using AI-enabled tools to support research, analysis, productivity, and communication, with appropriate judgment and attention to accuracy.
  • Comfort working with ambiguity, learning new topics quickly, and contributing to projects with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated initiative, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to delivering high-quality work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in banking, financial services, business operations, governance, risk management, controls, program management, or strategy.
  • Experience using data, reporting, or research to generate insights, support decisions, or recommend process improvements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Word).
  • Experience with data visualization software, basic coding languages, and/or risk management tools.
