Stantec is seeking a highly qualified Senior Electrical Engineer for a commercial construction electrical leader who wants to move beyond project execution and actively shape a growing San Diego Buildings practice—maintaining & building trusted client relationships, influencing strategy, mentoring teams, and delivering technically excellent projects that improve experiences of building occupants.

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will be a visible leader and trusted advisor within Stantec’s Buildings Engineers practice. You will lead multidisciplinary project teams, guide clients through complex regulatory environments, and help grow Stantec’s Buildings Engineering presence in Southern California and the US West. You will balance hands-on project leadership with mentorship, and technical stewardship—playing a key role in differentiating Stantec as an innovative and reliable engineering design partner.

Your Key Responsibilities

Business Development/Marketing – Build Trusted Client Relationships & Grow the Practice

  • Lead and support business development efforts to win new work aligned with the studio, sector, and firm strategy.
  • Serve as a key client contact and trusted advisor, helping Stantec clients navigate technical, regulatory, and operational challenges.
  • Partner with Principals and marketing teams on proposals, interviews, and client pursuits, contributing technical insight and market knowledge.
  • Represent Stantec through industry events, conferences, presentations, and thought leadership.
  • Sustain and grow top‑line revenue in collaboration with Regional and Business Center leadership to support Buildings Engineering design and thought leadership growth across Southern California and the US West.
  • Nurture existing client relationships, while proactively pursuing opportunities for new business through strong client relationships and market awareness.

Lead Commercial Buildings Project Delivery

  • Own successful delivery of complex projects—from planning through construction—with decision-making authority and accountability for quality, schedule, budget, risk, and client satisfaction.
  • Lead electrical design for commercial building facilities, including power, lighting, and fire alarm systems, ensuring compliance with California Electrical/Energy/Green codes, and other California building codes.
  • Define project scope, goals, and deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders, including contractors, developers, owners, regulatory bodies, and internal teams
  • Develop project plans, resource allocations, and task-level budgets; track performance and provide project managers with scope, earned value, change, and financial management input.
  • Work collaboratively with project leaders, architects, design partners, peers, contractors, and other project stakeholders to define project objectives, deliverables, and success metrics, and develop innovative and practical solutions, and meet the project's conditions of satisfaction.
  • Ensure compliance with education, utility, and/or industrial regulations, quality standards, and best practices
  • Engage with external partners, including vendors and regulatory agencies, to ensure compliance and integration of project design.
  • Establish strong relationships with contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders to ensure design alignment with project objectives.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections to ensure project requirements are met.
  • Prepare detailed design documents, specifications, and reports.
  • Apply strong electrical engineering skills, experience, and knowledge to the design and oversight of the design for building projects.
  • Manage and plan the production resources and workflow to produce the design documentation, drawings, and calculations required for electrical engineering projects.
  • Act as QC (Quality Control) and/or independent reviewer on projects.
  • Effectively delegate work to production support staff.
  • Develop and deliver project-related client presentations.

Mentor, Lead, and Inspire Teams

  • Mentor and develop engineers and project leaders through feedback, goal setting, career planning, and a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Lead workload forecasting, resource management, staffing strategy, retention, utilization oversight, and talent pipeline development, including recruiting and interviewing support.
  • Lead change across practice standards, delivery methods, workflows, and technical processes to improve consistency, quality, and project outcomes.

Advance Technical Excellence

  • Stay current with evolving electrical engineering regulations, technologies, and best practices—and help integrate them into Stantec’s standards and processes.
  • Proactively pursues additional knowledge in related disciplines through continuous technical leadership learning.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of Electrical Engineering specifications, technical documentation, and standards in collaboration with other technical resources within Stantec.
  • Promote innovative, sustainable, and resilient design solutions that enhance occupant, staff, and facility outcomes.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • 12+ years of experience in delivering electrical engineering designs within the civic, electrical transportation, higher education sector, and/or industrial sectors with a proven track record of successful project delivery
  • Proven success leading complex buildings design projects and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising up to five FTEs, including formal feedback, goal setting, career development, workload balancing, utilization oversight, and annual review input.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to navigate complex organizational structures and build consensus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complex project aspects, assess variables, and develop reliable design solutions independently.
  • Exceptional leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse group of engineers.
  • Proactive mindset with a commitment to fostering an inclusive and collaborative team culture
  • Passion for enhancing building design delivery, creating sustainable environments, and driving innovative engineering solutions.
  • Strong project and commercial management skills, including task-level scope/performance tracking, earned value/budget awareness, change management, and commercial risk input.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including California building codes, Green/Energy Code regulations, UL, NFPA, IEEE requirements as they specifically apply to buildings design in Southern California.
  • Exceptional technical understanding and working knowledge of electrical building systems & site infrastructure.
  • Ability to develop concepts and ideas before evolving them into coordinated project deliverables.
  • Experience making sound project decisions, managing risks and scope changes, and being accountable for technical, financial, schedule, and client outcomes.
  • Functional knowledge of Revit and BIM workflows.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Bluebeam.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field
  • Minimum 12+ years of relevant experience, or 8+ years of experience combined with equivalent education and/or demonstrated skills.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) – Electrical Engineering - is required.
  • Experience with Lean/IPD, Design‑Build, or Design‑Assist delivery methods is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Higher Education, DSA, commercial building electrification, industrial, and/or similar sector clients is highly valued.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
