Job Overview

The Senior Manager Business Development is tasked with developing departmental plans, including business, production, and organizational priorities. The role requires multi-disciplinary expertise and the ability to understand the industry to achieve financial and operational objectives. They manage multiple related teams, set organizational priorities, and allocate the appropriate resources. They must identify and resolve complex technical, operational, and organizational problems. The Senior Manager Business Development directly impacts business results by supporting and function-specific projects, products, services, and technologies and developing policies and plans.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Assess project opportunities, evaluation of technical and commercial viability
  • Serve as the opportunity leader for multi-disciplinary international teams (technical, commercial, legal, digital)
  • Own all project management-related tasks from origination and offers until the signing of all project-related contracts
  • Identify opportunities and determine the approach for new customers, and maintain a successful customer relationship
  • Handle contract negotiations with the support of the legal team for all relevant project contracts
  • Prepare offers with the support of the Proposal & Estimation group and offer presentations to customers
  • Prepare and coordinate investment decisions
  • Report to the Commercial Vice President & General Manager of Business Development
  • Contribute to strategic planning initiatives and identify new opportunities
  • Make bid/no bid recommendations
  • Develop quarterly forecasts
  • Oversee the development of capture strategies for targeted projects
  • Participate in and contribute to bid reviews
  • Lead post-bid negotiations
  • Monitor and maintain department budgets
  • Ensure compliance with company procedures
  • Adhere to report requirements, being able to verify/give an opinion on targeted prospects
  • Effectively represent the company regardless of the task
  • Guide the pre-qualification process
  • Work to collaborate with the Proposals Manager to develop successful bidding strategies
  • Coordinate with Country Managers for intelligence on future projects
  • Support Project Champions through the bid process
  • Ensure Capture Strategy is implemented during the bidding phase
  • Contribute to the project risk/opportunity management process
  • Coordinate with Market Analysts and ensure project data is updated for prospective work
  • Interact with functional heads to determine capability & competitiveness
  • Identify and coordinate bid input as required
  • Being able to verify/clarify possible opportunities contained in our Market Databases
  • Assist with Country/Site Visits and vetting potential subcontractors
  • Communicate a compelling vision for the future

  • Own and lead the implementation, enforcement, and verification of compliance with all McDermott policies and procedures
  • Ensure employees understand their responsibility and authority to effectively implement the requirements of all McDermott policies and procedures
  • Ensure the timely completion of all mandatory training by themselves and their teams

Essential Qualifications and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or related disciplines is a plus
  • 10+ years of experience in a similar position in the oil & gas industry
  • Extensive experience in offshore oil and gas organization and various functions within the organization
  • Profound experience in the field of business and project development, ideally in industrial energy solutions
  • Ability to combine technology with commercial and legal aspects of projects, ability to manage internal and external interfaces of a project
  • Ability to formulate long-term marketing strategies and customer relationships that connect with the overall strategy of the company
  • Ability to connect technology with commercial and legal aspects of the projects, ability to manage the internal and external interfaces of a project
  • Entrepreneurial mindset: the ability to work independently, willingness to take the initiative, and high level of commitment
  • Highly communication & interpersonal skills to establish an effective relationship with customers and stakeholders
  • Knowledgeable in Commercial (contractual), financial, and risk principles
  • Knowledgeable on End-market solutions, industry drivers, and geographical trends
  • Adaptable – continuously improves personal approach and McDermott’s position within the sales process
  • Ability to manage business relationships at all levels; capability to provide guidance
  • Proficiency in CRM system, currently Salesforce
  • A high degree of computer literacy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Proactive and flexible in addressing changes and challenges
  • Ability to work on own initiative with little supervision
