GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Operations Training Instructional Designer is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and continuously improving operational training programs that support employee performance, safety, quality, productivity, and engagement across manufacturing operations. This role partners closely with plant leadership, subject matter experts (SMEs), supervisors, and frontline employees to create effective learning solutions that accelerate onboarding, increase job proficiency, and support operational excellence.

The ideal candidate combines instructional design expertise with a strong understanding of manufacturing processes, adult learning principles, and frontline workforce development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Training Design & Development

  • Design and develop engaging operational training programs for manufacturing employees, team leaders, supervisors, and support functions.
  • Create instructor-led, virtual, eLearning, video-based, and performance support learning solutions.
  • Develop training materials including:
  • Facilitator guides
  • Participant materials
  • Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) learning aids
  • Work instructions
  • Job aids
  • Assessments and knowledge checks
  • Skills certification programs
  • Convert technical and operational information into clear, learner-friendly training materials.
  • Apply adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies to maximize learning effectiveness and retention.

Manufacturing Operations Support

  • Partner with plant leaders and subject matter experts to identify operational training needs.
  • Support onboarding and proficiency development for manufacturing employees.
  • Develop training programs related to:
  • Production processes
  • Equipment operation
  • Quality systems
  • Safety procedures
  • Lean manufacturing principles
  • Continuous improvement initiatives
  • Standard work practices
  • Conduct job task analyses to identify critical knowledge, skills, and performance requirements.
  • Observe plant operations to ensure training reflects actual workflows and operational expectations.

Learning Program Management

  • Maintain training documentation and learning records.
  • Ensure training content remains current, compliant, and aligned with operational changes.
  • Manage training project timelines and deliverables.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness through assessments, performance metrics, observations, and stakeholder feedback.
  • Recommend enhancements based on operational performance trends and learner feedback.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Build strong partnerships with:
  • Operations leaders
  • Plant managers
  • Safety teams
  • Quality teams
  • Human Resources
  • Continuous Improvement teams
  • Facilitate SME working sessions to capture operational knowledge and best practices.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on learning and performance improvement initiatives.

Continuous Improvement

  • Use operational and training metrics to identify performance gaps and learning opportunities.
  • Recommend innovative learning solutions that improve employee capability and business results.
  • Support workforce development initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, retention, and career progression.
  • Contribute to a culture of learning, accountability, and operational excellence.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Education, Organizational Development, Learning & Development, Operations Management, Industrial Technology, or related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

  • 3-5+ years of instructional design experience in manufacturing, industrial, logistics, operations, or technical training environments.
  • Experience developing instructor-led, eLearning, and performance support materials.
  • Experience creating video-based learning and digital learning assets.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies.
  • Experience working directly with operational subject matter experts.
  • Excellent project management, communication, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in both office and production environments.

OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred

  • Manufacturing industry experience.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Continuous Improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS).
  • Familiarity with SOP development and technical documentation.

TRAVEL REQUIRED: Travel may be required up to 25% of the time to support our manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and Canada, including automobile travel amongst the three manufacturing facilities we have in the Columbus, GA area.

WORK LOCATION: This is an on-site role at our Corporate Ridge Parkway location.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbent must be able to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb, balance, kneel, talk, hear, and lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally.

BENEFITS AND COMPENSATION

The salary range for applicants in this position generally ranges between $68,427 and $85,534. This range is an estimate, based on potential employee qualifications, operations, needs, and other considerations permitted by law.
