Michael Baker International’s Construction Services staff supports clients by acting as their trusted on-site agent through all phases of construction, from pre-design to close-out, by providing qualified construction managers, inspectors, constructability reviewers, schedulers, estimators and, safety experts. What We’re Looking For
Michael Baker is seeking a Resident Engineer to lead and oversee transportation and infrastructure construction projects throughout Connecticut. This role requires a hands-on engineering professional who excels in problem‑solving, ensures project compliance, and delivers high‑quality construction outcomes while maintaining strong relationships with contractors, client representatives, and regulatory agencies.
What You’ll Do
- Assist in positioning the firm to compete for future CTDOT CE&I opportunities through project leadership and client engagement.
- Serve as the on ‑ site lead for construction projects, managing daily field operations and acting as the primary point of contact.
- Oversee contractor activities to ensure compliance with permits, project plans, specifications, CTDOT standards, and safety requirements.
- Review and interpret contract documents, permits, design plans, shop drawings, RFIs, work schedules, and project submittals.
- Monitor project progress, maintain detailed daily reports, and track quantities, materials, and work activities.
- Identify and address field issues, providing engineering judgment and recommending solutions to maintain project quality, schedule and cost.
- Facilitate regular progress meetings with contractors and client representatives; prepare agendas, meeting minutes, and follow ‑ up action items.
- Manage project documentation including RFIs, submittals, change orders, field memos, claims, and other required forms and records.
- Perform inspection oversight to verify work quality, materials testing compliance, and adherence to CTDOT specifications.
- Support cost estimating, change order evaluations, and negotiation of contractor proposals.
- Ensure all construction activities comply with permits and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Provide leadership to inspection staff and engineering support personnel.
- Provide construction engineering support on active projects, with flexibility to assume expanded daily responsibilities as workload dictates.
What You Need to Succeed
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- Connecticut Professional Engineer licensure and/or CCM certification
- 12+ years of construction engineering or construction management experience on transportation and infrastructure projects.
- CTDOT CE&I experience, including 8+ years field inspection and 6+ years supervisory.
- Strong knowledge of highway, bridge, facilities and railroad construction practices and procedures
- Experience with CTDOT project management and construction documentation systems, AASHTOWare
- NICET, NETTCP, ACI, ATTSA, QCIS, CESSWI certifications preferred.
COMPENSATION
The approximate compensation range for this position is $175,000 TO $220,000. This compensation range is a good-faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
