 Project Summary
AIS is seeking a Senior React Developer/Engineer to design, build, secure, and sustain modern web applications supporting high-visibility federal defense missions. The engineer will serve as a senior technical contributor on a Messaging Document Repository, a Department of Defense Impact Level 5 solution that manages Controlled Unclassified Information, multi-tier executive clearance workflows, controlled repository access, and auditable dissemination to authorized congressional users.
The ideal candidate combines advanced React and TypeScript expertise with strong software-engineering judgment, accessibility and usability awareness, secure API integration experience, automated testing discipline, and the ability to deliver in regulated cloud environments. This role works closely with product owners, UX specialists, backend engineers, cybersecurity personnel, DevSecOps engineers, and government stakeholders to translate complex operational and security requirements into reliable, intuitive user experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop responsive, accessible, and maintainable React applications using TypeScript and modern component-based patterns.
- Define frontend architecture, reusable component libraries, routing, state-management, form-validation, and error-handling standards.
- Build intuitive interfaces for document ingestion, metadata capture, multi-echelon review, concurrence and non-concurrence decisions, access requests, repository search, and administrative management.
- Implement complex workflow experiences that clearly represent package status, approval gates, required comments, validation rules, and exception paths.
- Optimize rendering, bundle size, network usage, and client-side behavior to meet performance objectives for directory lookups, repository searches, and mission workflows.
- Secure Integration and Identity
- Integrate frontend applications with secure REST or GraphQL APIs, identity services, document repositories, notification services, and audit capabilities.
- Implement role- and attribute-aware user experiences consistent with Attribute-Based Access Control, least privilege, and Zero Trust principles.
- Support DISA PKI and mutual TLS authentication flows, session handling, authorization failures, sanitized error states, and secure deep-link behavior.
- Ensure protected document names, metadata, file paths, contact details, and other sensitive information are not exposed to unauthorized or unauthenticated users.
- Apply secure coding practices for input validation, output encoding, dependency management, secrets handling, and mitigation of common web vulnerabilities.
- Quality Engineering and DevSecOps
- Develop unit, component, integration, accessibility, and end-to-end tests using appropriate modern testing frameworks.
- Participate in peer reviews, architecture discussions, threat modeling, vulnerability remediation, and release-readiness activities.
- Build and maintain automated quality gates in CI/CD pipelines, including linting, static analysis, dependency scanning, test execution, and production build validation.
- Troubleshoot complex browser, authentication, API, performance, and environment-specific defects across development, test, staging, and production environments.
- Create technical designs, interface specifications, runbooks, engineering standards, and support documentation needed for secure operations and RMF evidence.
- Technical Leadership and Consulting
- Operate with significant autonomy on complex assignments while aligning technical decisions with customer mission, security, schedule, and maintainability needs.
- Translate operational requirements and UX concepts into implementation plans, technical tasks, acceptance criteria, and delivery estimates.
- Mentor less-experienced engineers, establish development conventions, and provide actionable code-review feedback.
- Communicate technical risks, tradeoffs, dependencies, and recommendations clearly to engineering teams and government stakeholders.
- Contribute to Agile planning, demonstrations, retrospectives, backlog refinement, and continuous improvement of engineering practices.
Required For This Opportunity
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Typically five or more years of professional software-engineering experience, including substantial hands-on development with React.
- Advanced proficiency with React, TypeScript, JavaScript, semantic HTML, modern CSS, and responsive web design.
- Experience designing reusable components, custom hooks, frontend architecture, and scalable state-management patterns such as Redux Toolkit, React Query, Zustand, or equivalent.
- Experience integrating secure APIs and working with asynchronous data, authentication, authorization, file upload and download, search, and workflow-driven applications.
- Strong knowledge of automated testing with tools such as Jest, Vitest, React Testing Library, Cypress, Playwright, or equivalent.
- Proficiency with Git-based development, pull-request workflows, package management, CI/CD pipelines, and modern frontend build tooling.
- Demonstrated understanding of web security, OWASP risks, accessibility standards, browser behavior, and application performance optimization.
- Ability to communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical stakeholders and independently resolve complex engineering problems.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the security clearance and access required by the customer.
Nice to Have Skills
- Experience with Next.js or another production React framework.
- Experience delivering applications in Azure Government, AWS GovCloud, or Department of Defense Impact Level 4, 5, or 6 environments.
- Knowledge of CUI handling, NIST SP 800-53, RMF, DISA guidance, FIPS-validated cryptography, Zero Trust, or Authority to Operate processes.
- Experience with Public Key Infrastructure, client-certificate authentication, mutual TLS, enterprise identity platforms, or claims-based authorization.
- Experience integrating with SharePoint, Microsoft 365, Azure services, search platforms, document-management systems, or workflow engines.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, feature flags, observability, and frontend telemetry.
- Experience designing accessible applications aligned with Section 508 and WCAG.
- Experience supporting federal defense, intelligence, Army, or other regulated government customers.
- Active U.S. Government Secret clearance or higher.
- Security+ or relevant Microsoft Azure certification.
This role is central to AIS’s delivery of secure, mission-focused digital solutions. The Senior React Developer/Engineer will help modernize a critical messaging and document-clearance capability by creating dependable user experiences that protect sensitive information, enforce approved workflows, improve transparency, and support continuous auditability in a highly regulated environment.
