Who we want

The Senior General Accountant supports the organization's day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, grant tracking, month-end close activities, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate will have strong accounting skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to supporting the organization's mission through sound financial management.

What you will do

General Accounting

  • Prepare and record complex journal entries and maintain the general ledger to ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)..
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis and investigate unusual transactions and variances.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.

Accounts Payable and Receivable

  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable activities and ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to internal controls.
  • Process vendor/subgrantee/contractor invoices and expense reimbursements.
  • Record and reconcile incoming donations, grants, and other revenue sources.
  • Assist with donor and grant receivable tracking.
  • Review accounting transactions and resolve complex accounting issues.
  • Monitor cash activity and ensure timely recording of receipts and disbursements.

Grant and Fund Accounting

  • Ensure accurate recording and classification of program, departmental, and funding source activity.
  • Support organizational compliance with donor restrictions and revenue recognition requirements.
  • Provide accounting support related to grants, contributions, and restricted funding as needed.
  • Assist in ensuring proper allocation of expenses across programs and funding sources.

Financial Reporting and Compliance

  • Develop supporting schedules, account analyses, and variance explanations.
  • Identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities through financial analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, GAAP, internal controls, organizational policies, and applicable regulations.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and supporting schedules.
  • Prepare audit schedules, workpapers, and supporting documentation.
  • Support preparation of Form 990 and other regulatory and financial reporting requirements.
  • Assist with annual audits and preparation of audit schedules.
  • Support preparation of Form 990 and other regulatory filings.

Budgeting and Analysis

  • Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Provide financial data, reporting, and analysis to leadership as requested.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Assist with budget-to-actual performance and investigate variances.

Internal Controls and Process Improvement

  • Evaluate accounting processes and recommend improvements to increase efficiency and strengthen internal controls.
  • Assist in developing, documenting, and maintaining accounting policies and procedures.
  • Support implementation and optimization of accounting systems and reporting tools.
  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives and special projects impacting financial operations.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and enhanced reporting capabilities.

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain confidentiality of financial and donor information.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives.
  • Support special projects and other duties as assigned.

What you will bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • 3-7 years of accounting experience required.
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting preferred.
  • Experience with grant accounting and fund accounting is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting, CFR200 and fund accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
  • Experience with systems such as Salesforce and MIP platforms preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

This position is located in Austin, Texas, and reports directly to the Controller.
