About The Role

Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision. Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team.

Works under the direction of the Division Chair, Division Manager and attending faculty. Supports the goals and philosophy of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Department of Surgery. Works in the clinical office of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery located at the Mt. Zion and Mission Bay campus. Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning implementation, and evaluation to provide safe therapeutic care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision. Assists with the management of patient care, Adult and Pediatrics, administered by other members of the nursing team. Assists the faculty members and residents with initial patient interactions, including interviews with patients; pre-operative and post-operative counseling regarding procedures, and coordinating care with other services. Responsible for medical equipment, purchasing implants, expanders and other supplies/ items needed for surgery and the clinic. In addition, assists with minor office procedures. This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Clinical duties

  • Responsible for maintaining the knowledge and abilities essential to the performance of stated behaviors.
  • Carries out legal responsibilities within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Establish pre and post-operative care protocols with the faculty.
  • Assist faculty and residents with individual clinics and patient care including:
  • Arrange and assist with in office minor surgical procedures
  • Assist with tissue expansion
  • Remove sutures
  • Remove and apply dressing as indicated.
  • Obtain supplies and equipment for individual procedures.
  • Provide telephone triage for patients with complications and notify appropriate physicians.
  • Initiate and process emergency admission to hospital as indicated.
  • Maintain files of patients requiring skilled nursing facility home care, and prescription refills.

Patient education

  • Provide information to patients and families regarding pre-operative evaluations and post-operative expectations, wound care, drain care, and complications.
  • Implement pre-operative teaching as indicated regarding blood donation, bowel preps, abstinence of tobacco, aspirin and non-steroidals.
  • Provide information on pre-operative tests and schedule asteriograms, CT scans, hand therapy and occupational therapy.
  • Provide patient education regarding injectables and skin care cosmetic products.
  • Provide information to patients for support groups and/or provide a former patient to speak with them.

Administrative duties

  • Maintain close working relationship with administrative staff to ensure the needs of the patient and faculty are met.
  • Coordinate with operating room staff to assure that supplies, special equipment, and medications are available for the patient.
  • Maintain list of pending surgeries in operating room of patients requiring implant, tissue expanders, and custom implants.
  • Coordinates patient; provide pre- and post-op photos as needed.
  • Maintain and order clinical supplies and forms for office.
  • Responsible for ordering, stocking, data entry and bookkeeping including purchase costs and sales income for injectables and skin care cosmetic products.
  • Apprise residents of pre-op work-ups, patient transfers and changes in operating room schedule.
  • Provide information to potential patients regarding procedures available at UCSF.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of recent RN experience in Plastic Surgery or surgical ambulatory patient care area.
  • Experience with ambulatory nursing clinical triage.
  • Epic training as it relates to APeX used at UCSF Medical Center
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Current healthcare provider BLS CPR certification.
  • Prior work with Transgender Community and Pediatrics.
  • Experience with Cosmetic products such as Botox, Juvaderm, and Fillers.
  • Knowledge or working experience with Lasers as it relates to Plastic Surgery
  • Knowledge and coordination of pre and post-operative care relating to Plastic Surgery.
  • The flexibility to orient and work in all UCSF Health locations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

  • BS in Psychology to deal with sensitive patient issues.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • BSN

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Active State of California Registered Nurse licensure
  • Active American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
