About The Role
About Us
AltaML is a leading North American applied AI company with extensive experience in building and operationalizing AI software solutions.
We are a company like no other – we believe in making small bets, failing fast, and being better together. We are looking for creative problem-solvers who obsess about the customer to find wins across different industries.
We don’t hire for fit; we hire to add. We are looking for people who play our core values of being: Agile, Gritty Humble, and Happy. If you’re passionate about AI/ML, thrive in a dynamic environment, and want to work with a diverse team of wickedly smart people, we want to hear from you!
The Role
You will be the designer on a product team, working directly with a product manager and a tech lead. Not a design resource that work gets sent to. In the room, from the first discovery conversation to the shipped product and every iteration after.
Your job on that team is to own usability risk. The PM worries about whether it is valuable and viable, the tech lead worries about whether we can build it, and you worry about whether users can actually use it, and whether they will want to. On enterprise AI products that risk is real and it is where most of these products fail. Users do not trust what they cannot understand, and they quietly stop using what slows them down.
The way you attack that risk is discovery and prototypes. You will sit in discovery sessions with clients and their end users. You will turn what you hear into prototypes fast, put them in front of users, watch what happens, and iterate. Prototypes are how we answer questions here, not documents about prototypes. The bar is not software that works. The bar is software that customers love to use.
You will design within our shared design system and standards, and you will make them better. When you find a pattern that works, it goes back into the system so every team benefits. When a standard fails a user, you flag it and help fix the standard, so the same problem does not get rebuilt ten more times. We define design standards up front, precise enough that our AI coding tools build things right the first time, and your findings from real users are what keep those standards honest.
What We're Looking for
-
Shipped software people actually use. A portfolio with real products behind it, and you can talk about what users did with them, not just how they looked.
-
You prototype fast and think in iterations. Figma and AI-assisted design tools, working prototypes over static mocks, and you would rather test three rough versions this week than one polished version next month.
-
You want to be in discovery. Talking to users is the part of the job you protect, not the part you delegate.
-
You are good with engineers and good with users , and can move between the two without losing either.
-
Accessibility is part of your craft. We build for government and public sector clients where accessible design is a requirement, not a nice to have.
-
You create traction in a fast and sometimes messy environment. This is not a settled design org and it will not be for a while.
Why This Opportunity Matters
You will be working on new age AI products, helping design the future of how AI gets deployed with our platform. The work is using AI to improve the lives of our customers and making a real difference, ensuring what we build is not just usable but lovable, because lovable is what earns adoption and keeps it. Your prototypes will be in front of real users within weeks of joining, and there is real room to grow here as the design practice grows around you.
