About the role
NPL is seeking an experienced and motivated Engineer, Senior - Mechanical & Piping to join the Capital & Projects Department. Reporting directly to the Superintendent - Engineering Projects , the Mechanical & Piping Senior Engineer will be responsible for leading mechanical and piping engineering activities associated with project design, engineering reviews, procurement support, contractor management, and project execution.
This role requires a proactive engineering professional capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously, providing technical oversight, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring engineering deliverables meet company standards, project objectives, and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective engineering solutions while supporting project development, procurement activities, construction execution, and operational readiness initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will
- Prepare and provide inputs to design deliverables but not limited to technical reports, documents and drawings including PIDs, datasheets and Material take-off orders (MTOs), inclusive and flange/gasket/bolting rating and selection.
- Provide work scope packages for engineering specification, design criteria and procurement support for work scope packages at various stages for all projects
- Be able to perform or review pipe stress analysis for critical lines viz., thermal expansion, support spacing, and equipment nozzle loading checks
- Specify right material of construction (metallurgy) and design ratings (pressure/ temperature) in accordance with applicable codes for the required process duty (inclusive corrosion allowance/ erosive/ slurry service etc)
- Build strong collaborative working relationships, manage contractors, consultants and support key stakeholders at various stages to adhere technical and statutory compliance, quality delivery, and ensure schedule baselines and contractual obligations.
- Able to produce technical drawings using AutoCAD software
- Prepare budget plans for Approval for Expenditure (AFE) and ensure projects are executed within the budget limits at appropriate stages
- Design Clear Plans process, materials tools and systems to ensure smooth flow of project transitions
- Perform risk assessments and develop mitigation plans
- Manage and mentor junior engineer(s)
- Maintain a high level of health and safety awareness and comply with NPL Occupational Health & Safety Policy and all health rules and procedures
About You
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- A bachelor-degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Minimum 8 years' relevant experience in mechanical and piping engineering.
- Strong technical or engineering design background including processing equipment, such as crushers, mills and conveyors
- Proficient with applicable standards such as:
- ASME B31.3 - piping/ flange classes and ratings
- ANSI/ ASME B16.5 - product standards
- AS1210/ ASME section VIII - pressure vessel codes (static equipment)
- AS/NZS 3500 - Plumbing and drainage code
- ASME B16.34 (Valves), or equivalent
- Strong technical knowledge of rotating equipment (API 610/ 618 for pumps/, compressors, fans/blowers) and static equipment (tanks, piping systems).
- Mining or mineral processing experience is desirable.
- Experience in engineering project management.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD; AutoCAD 3D / CAESAR II (stress analysis) / Inventor or Solid works experience is advantageous.
- Proven track record of seamless cross-function coordination and able to function effectively on interdepartmental assignments as required.
- Strong communication, planning, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a dynamic operational environment
Mobilization Requirement
This is a PNG National position, a site-based role on a FIFO arrangement with a rotation of 21 days on and 14 days off. Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol screening (to be arranged only for successful candidates after the interview stage), and provide an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months).
