CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Research Assistant 1 contributes to research investigators by providing research and experimentation support while following established protocols. The Research Assistant 1 performs a clerical role to ensure the smooth operations of office facilities.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Sets up and operates various scientific apparatus and makes minor repairs.
  2. Prepares correspondence and answers phones.
  3. Formulates and maintains bibliographies and completes applications and forms.
  4. Orders laboratory supplies and maintains culture media reagents.
  5. Reviews and edits various materials for publication and prepares publication schedules.
  6. Maintains appropriate logs, records, and study notebooks.
  7. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience, certification or license

Certification and Licensing

Experience

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience required

DRI specific functions include but are not limited to

  • Participates in lab organization, lab cleaning and other lab maintenance activities.
  • Participates in autoclaving and disinfection of lab material.
  • Excellent planification and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills: communicates effectively with supervisor and colleagues.
  • Follows safety recommendations in handling lab products, reagents and materials.
  • Follows EH&S and UM safety recommendations and appropriately handles lab waste.
  • In case any incidence occurs, whether administrative or in the lab, works on promptly remediating it and communicates with the supervisor and other UM departments if appropriate in a timely manner.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment: including inventories for chemicals, cells, tissues, and antibodies etc, following UM requirements when applicable.
  • Maintains appropriate logs, records, and study notebooks: keeps online and physical documentation related to experiments, lab activities, protocols, SOPs and procedures.
  • Operation of routine basic instruments such as centrifuges, shakers, water baths, balances, cell counter, inverted microscopes, etc.
  • Operation of more complex instruments such as flow cytometers, confocal microscopes and other advanced microscopes and slide scanner when needed after appropriate training.
  • Reads and understands data sheets of lab products, reagents and materials.
  • Prepares buffers and other routinary lab reagents.
  • Follows routinary lab protocols and performs routinary experiments.
  • Participates in complex lab experiments supporting the team when needed.
  • Participate in cell culture, microscopy and flow cytometry protocols.
  • Participate in image acquisition and image analysis.
  • Analyzes routinary results of experiments.
  • Presents updates and results in lab meetings.
