About The Role

Global Merchant & Network Services brings together American Express' merchant and network-related businesses. This includes the management of our relationships across the globe with both the millions of merchants who accept American Express, as well as our partners in countries and territories that deliver card acceptance, issuance and innovation.

The American Express business has two core types of customers. The Card Members that use our cards to make purchases, and the businesses that accept them. In Global Merchant & Network Services, we primarily focus on the businesses that accept our cards. We bring together the businesses that manage and evolve the company’s relationships with the millions of merchants around the world that accept American Express, as well as the team that runs the company’s payment network and manages bank partnerships globally. This is an exciting time for GMNS. We are expanding global acceptance of our cards, driving greater usage of our network, leveraging our modern capabilities to capture broader revenue streams, and driving innovation both in-house and with partners. To put the scale of our global reach in numbers:

  • More than 80 million global locations accept American Express payment products
  • We operate in 198 countries and territories
  • We have 140+ million cards in force, that perform 12 billion transactions per year and contribute more than $1.5 trillion in network volume
  • We have 190+ partners who either issue cards on our network, and/or sign new businesses to accept Amex on our behalf

The Financial Crime Delivery team within Global Merchant & Network Services plays an important role in strengthening Know Your Customer (KYC) activities across the merchant lifecycle through effective operational oversight, monitoring, remediation, and continuous improvement.

How will you make an impact in this role?

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the merchant business and KYC requirements across the merchant lifecycle.
  • Support KYC operational oversight and governance activities, including monitoring key activities, identifying trends, and supporting reporting and escalation processes.
  • Assist with KYC remediation initiatives, including tracking progress, analyzing issues, and supporting the resolution of operational gaps.
  • Analyze KYC operational data and monitoring results to identify trends, opportunities for improvement, and potential areas of risk.
  • Support enhancements to KYC processes and workflows, including KYC Refresh, with a focus on improving efficiency, consistency, and control effectiveness.
  • Assist in the development and enhancement of governance routines, procedures, monitoring, and reporting for key KYC activities.
  • Partner with colleagues across Compliance, Risk, Control Management, Global Servicing, Technology, and local business teams to support implementation of KYC/AML requirements and operational improvements.
  • Support projects and initiatives designed to strengthen KYC capabilities and drive consistent standards across global markets.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a full-time Master’s degree program, with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and June 2028
  • Interest and experience in risk management, KYC, AML, or Financial Crime compliance.
  • Project management experience: Superior organizational skills with the ability to autonomously manage several initiatives at once and drive results in a fast paced, multi-partner environment with constant change.
  • Effective communicator and influencer: Excellent written and oral communication skills, proficient in developing excellent quality presentations and deliverables for an executive audience.
  • Problem solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios effectively.
  • Collaborative team player: Ability to collaborate within cross-functional teams.
  • Project management experience: Superior organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, delivering on deadlines and high-quality, timely outputs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-year minimum experience in operational risk management/lifecycle activities.
