The Civil Digital Modernisation business delivers IT services to Australian Federal and State Government departments and agencies to accelerate digital modernisation and ensure secure, resilient, and adaptive environments that meet evolving regulatory, compliance, and business needs. The Opportunity

As a Senior Unix Engineer, you’ll play a key role in supporting and evolving the enterprise Unix and Linux platforms that underpin critical business and customer services. Working as part of a highly skilled infrastructure team, you’ll provide technical leadership across operational support, automation, security, resilience, and platform modernisation initiatives.

  • Lead the administration, optimisation, and continuous improvement of enterprise Unix/Linux environments, ensuring they remain secure, reliable, and available to support critical business operations.
  • Drive infrastructure automation and operational efficiency through tools such as Shell scripting, Python, Ansible, Terraform, and configuration management practices across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments.
  • Partner with application, database, middleware, network, security, and architecture teams to resolve complex technical challenges, improve platform performance, and support technology refresh, migration, and cloud adoption initiatives.
  • Contribute to a culture of operational excellence by enhancing system resilience, supporting disaster recovery and high-availability solutions, mentoring other engineers, and helping shape infrastructure standards, roadmaps, and best practices.

About You

You are an experienced Unix/Linux infrastructure professional who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, improving platform reliability, and driving automation. You bring a collaborative approach, thrive in enterprise environments, and are passionate about building secure, resilient, and high-performing platforms.

Essential

  • Significant experience in Unix/Linux systems administration or engineering within large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Experience with enterprise operating systems such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), SUSE Linux, IBM AIX, or similar platforms.
  • Advanced knowledge of Unix/Linux operating system architecture, administration, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and capacity management.
  • Experience managing operating system patching, upgrades, lifecycle management, vulnerability remediation, and security hardening activities.
  • Capability in Shell scripting and automation, with experience using tools such as Python, Ansible, Terraform, or equivalent technologies.
  • Knowledge of storage technologies including LVM, SAN, NAS, and enterprise file systems.
  • Experience supporting high-availability, clustering, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Understanding of TCP/IP networking, DNS, SSH, HTTP/HTTPS, and infrastructure troubleshooting practices.
  • Experience with system monitoring, logging, performance management, and operational support for critical production environments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with technical stakeholders, lead complex investigations, and contribute to mentoring and knowledge sharing across engineering teams.

Advantageous

  • Experience with PowerHA/HACMP, Veritas Volume Manager, Veritas Cluster Server, or comparable clustering and storage technologies.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, or hybrid cloud environments.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability platforms such as Splunk, Dynatrace, Grafana, or Prometheus.
  • Knowledge of enterprise application environments including Oracle, WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps, SRE, Agile, or ITIL practices.
  • Relevant Unix/Linux, Red Hat, IBM AIX, cloud, or infrastructure certifications.

Qualifications

A degree, diploma, or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline is desirable. Relevant Unix/Linux, Red Hat, IBM AIX, cloud, or infrastructure certifications will be highly regarded.

This role requires the successful applicant to hold a NV-1 Security Clearance .
