FTC – Parental Cover: Oct 2026–Jan 2028
Role Summary
Embedded within the Oil Strategist team, the Market Strategist partners with senior commercial customers to develop market views through fundamental analysis and assessment of key price drivers, helping inform trading strategy and risk deployment.
The role combines strong energy market expertise with quantitative analysis to assess refining fundamentals, develop models and generate actionable insights. The Market Strategist will challenge established thinking, identify new opportunities and translate sophisticated analysis into clear messages for trading and commercial partners.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide timely refinery efficiency analysis, insights and forecasts across FSU, Europe and West Africa.
- Assess refinery maintenance, operating cycles and forward forecasts using robust, evidence-based analysis.
- Support and challenge trading positions through analysis of refining markets and assets, identifying new trading opportunities and chipping in to strategy discussions.
- Develop original analysis linking market fundamentals and price movements to trading and origination activity.
- Develop, maintain and embed quantitative models to assess fundamentals and their relationship to price.
- Build positive relationships across trading, analytics, regions and commodity lines to improve connectivity and deliver effective solutions.
- Leverage the capabilities of the wider multidisciplinary analytics team and strengthen technical and market expertise across the business.
- Continue to develop and embed analytics infrastructure and provide mentorship to junior analysts.
Crucial Experience & Requirements
- Professional and/or academic experience in analytical roles.
- Confirmed understanding of FSU and European refining markets and fundamentals.
- Understanding of relevant commodity markets, traded instruments and energy economics.
- Proven track record to build effective partnerships with collaborators and deliver outcomes.
- Subject-matter expertise in a relevant commodity or technical subject area.
- Experience developing quantitative analytical tools and infrastructure.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to present sophisticated analysis clearly and succinctly.
Desirable
- Knowledge of downstream oil markets, refinery processes and economics.
- Understanding of upstream crude production and developments.
- Experience generating tradeable insights from analysis.
- Knowledge of refinery linear programming.
- Experience in statistics, econometrics, data science and/or AI.
- Proficiency in Python, data science platforms and Power BI.
- Proficiency in Russian (written and spoken).
