A Day in the Life

The Controls Engineer I provides electrical and controls engineering support for manufacturing equipment within the General Surgical Products Focus Factory at Medtronic. This is an entry-level role designed for recent graduates with a degree in Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, or related Engineering fields. The engineer will work closely with senior engineers, maintenance, quality, and manufacturing teams to support equipment troubleshooting, process improvements, equipment validations, and automation projects.

The Controls Engineer I will

  • Learn and follow established engineering standards, best practices, and standard operating procedures.
  • Support manufacturing equipment and automation systems under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Assist with equipment troubleshooting and root cause investigations to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure equipment operates safely and meets product quality requirements.
  • Support documentation activities, including operating instructions, electrical schematics, equipment specifications, software backups, and change records.
  • Assist with equipment qualification and validation activities, including FATs, SATs, and Installation Qualification (IQ) protocols.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, and productivity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day technical support to manufacturing and maintenance teams.
  • Assist in troubleshooting manufacturing equipment and machine controls.
  • Support root cause analysis activities for equipment failures and process issues.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation.
  • Assist with troubleshooting PLCs, HMIs, vision systems, robotics, and other automation technologies.
  • Update electrical schematics, component lists, and documentation for existing equipment.
  • Support the development of equipment specifications and vendor requirements.
  • Participate in projects focused on improving equipment reliability and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
  • Assist with equipment design reviews, installations, and commissioning activities.
  • Participate in DFMEA, PFMEA, machine risk assessments, and other quality and safety activities.
  • Support equipment validation and qualification activities.
  • Work effectively with Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, EHS, and other functional teams.
  • Occasional travel (up to 5%) to support suppliers or other manufacturing locations.

Qualifications

  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Basic understanding of electrical and controls engineering principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Hands-on experience through internships, co-ops, senior projects, or laboratory work is preferred.
  • Exposure to PLC programming, HMI development, robotics, vision systems, or industrial automation is preferred.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or electrical design software is a plus.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and equipment troubleshooting is a plus.
  • Understanding of machine safety principles is a plus.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or related engineering discipline required.

Experience

  • 0-2 years of engineering experience.
  • Relevant internships, co-op assignments, senior design projects, research experience, or hands-on technical experience will be considered.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$69,600.00 - $104,400.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance , Health Savings Account , Healthcare Flexible Spending Account , Life insurance, Long-term disability leave , Dependent daycare spending account , Tuition assistance/reimbursement , and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
