About the role

The Tax Adviser Role is part of Finance – Tax & Treasury Team responsible for India and Middle East jurisdiction of Rest of World (ROW) tax team. The role will report to Senior Tax Manager – ROW and will be responsible for partnering with all BP businesses and function and within the Tax Function and embedded finance to provide multi- jurisdictional tax advice to help optimise BP's tax position. The role will also engage with Tax authorities and is accountable for ensuring effective tax governance including compliance, audit, reporting and risk management.

The Tax Adviser will work through a combination of internal teams, outsourced providers, external advisers and joint venture support arrangements.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with business and functions and provide optimized and risk led tax advice to support business objective. Ensure that tax attributes and impacts are understood by business.
  • Supervise developments in tax legislation and policy and provide guidance on the impact of those developments on the business. Work closely with operations, transfer pricing and technology team to ensure that impacts of changes are considered in the desired manner.
  • Maintain oversight of all direct and indirect tax compliance activities performed by internal teams, external providers and joint venture partners including tax service arrangements (TSA). Work closely with Tax Operations team to ensure the timely and accurate completion of tax filings, Corporate Income Tax compliance, transfer pricing documentation and all associated compliance obligations.
  • Coordinate responses to tax authority requests and ensure appropriate governance and documentation is maintained. Provide technical inputs to tax submissions and support completion of audits before tax authorities and effectively coordinate work across FBT, business finance and wider tax teams.
  • Work closely with Finance teams to ensure the quality and integrity of data used in support of tax compliance and reporting activities. Ensure robust documentation is maintained to support tax filings, tax positions, audit activity and governance requirements.
  • Support Finance team in statutory audits & group reporting to ensure tax related issues are well understood and appropriately reported. Maintain relationship with Big 4 firms, tax counsel and seek assurance to the positions taken by BP in this regard as appropriate. Ensure that internal compliance (LTP, GFO, Due Diligence, BSI, Tax Reporting Tool, Deferred tax etc.) are in accordance with prevailing regulations and BP internal policy and guidelines for both India and Middle East businesses.
  • Support country business and tax leadership in engagement with industry groups, government bodies and fiscal authorities on matters affecting the business.
  • Look for opportunity for automation and standardisation for all tax processes working in partnership with tax technology and FBT

Crucial Experience and Qualifications

  • Educated to minimum degree/masters level in accounting and finance. Minimum 8 -10 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Extensive tax advisory, compliance and risk management experience preferably within a global or multinational environment.
  • Solid understanding of Indian tax legislation and practice, including Corporate Income Tax, GST, Employment Taxes and Transfer Pricing.
  • Significant experience handling tax authorities, audits, enquiries, disputes and regulatory interactions.
  • Strong analytical, communication and customer management and influencing skills
  • Experience handling external advisers, outsourced service providers and multi-party delivery models.
  • Good understanding of tax governance, internal controls and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience handling tax accounting, cash tax and tax reporting requirements.
  • Proven track record to work optimally within multidisciplinary teams and build productive relationships across Finance, Legal, HR, Commercial and Operational functions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to communicate tax concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with OECD tax developments and international taxation matters affecting multinational groups.
  • Adaptability and resilience, with a willingness to embrace new technologies and automation.

Desirable Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience within the Oil & Gas and Energy sector
  • Experience supporting business separations, joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions or large-scale organisational change programmes.
  • Experience supporting Service Agreements and transitioning tax activities into standalone operating models.
  • Experience managing tax activities across more than one jurisdiction, including through outsourced providers and external advisers.
