About The Role
- Assists nurse/physician with triage and primary assessment of patient: Notifies
- triage/charge/primary nurse of patient in distress. Assists patient and/or family
- to appropriate exam area and places on stretcher. Initiates cardiac monitoring
- and/or EKG. Functions as Triage Technician for adult and pediatric populations,
- obtains vital signs and reports to nurse; measures and records patients' weight
- in Kg, and visual acuity. Greets patients on arrival and assists triage nurse as
- directed with v/s, EKGs, urine specimens, and blood glucose. Performs basic
- EMT skills: simple dressings, application of ice, splinting, elevation of
extremities. Assists nurse/physician with immediate intervention procedures
- initiates EKG according to trigger guidelines; performs blood glucose.
- Professionalism/Accountability: Seeks to build on personal strengths;
- recognizes personal limits. Accepts responsibility and is accountable for
- decision making. Provides appropriate, constructive, and relevant feedback to
- peers regarding their practice. Acts as a resource on the role of PCTs in the
- E.D. Participates in the education and supervision of new staff technicians. Acts
- as a resource on the role and development of technicians in the E.D. Provides
- leadership on problem resolution. Preferred member of a professional
- organization. Identifies/adheres to unit policies concerning breaks, personal
- phone calls, cellular phone use, leaving the work area on non-break time,
- scheduling, and absences from work. Attend department meetings as required.
- Observes and maintains isolation precautions; Equipment disinfection: Adheres
- to the recommended hand hygiene practices as defined by Infection Control.
- Maintains standard precautions on all patients; washes hands before and after
- caring for each patient. Initiates isolation precautions when necessary; follows
- instructions on isolation signs when indicated. Replenishes PPE storage areas
- throughout department. Cleans EMS equipment and returns to EMS equipment
- storage area. Assists with disinfecting stretchers after patient use. Rinses soiled
- surgical trays prior to placing in Dirty Utility area.
- Reports patient care and determines priorities of care: Recognizes changes in
- general patient condition and reports to primary or charge RN. Measures and
- reports: vital signs, output from urinals, bedpans, foley catheters, wall suction
- (gastric or respiratory), and oral intake. Demonstrates flexibility in responding
- to patient and department needs while completing assignments. Works as a
- team member in meeting unit needs, changing from assigned area as needed.
- Contributes knowledge of individual patient routines to the plan of care.
- Proactively monitor assignments and communicate frequently with primary
- nurse and charge technician; works through the Charge Nurse and Charge
- Technician to reset priorities of multiple assignments to be completed.
- Communicates with the Charge Technician regarding assignments and
- department issues. Utilizes ICS during times of disasters. Educated on use of
- the Disaster Triage Tag. Job Function: 05. Patient safety and comfort
- measures: Properly identifies patients prior to intervention utilizing two patient
- identifiers. Usage of Soft ID system; proactively answers call bells and requests
- for assistance. Cleans and stocks panels/rooms/carts as per assignment and
- monitors/restocks as needed. Maintains bell rail position on occupied stretchers.
- Applies brakes on all stretchers. Assists RN in Applying restraints, responds to
- AHS Emergency Codes (Code Purple, Code Red, etc.) Assists patients to
- disrobe for exam. Secures belongings in patient belonging bag. Completes
- valuable inventory as needed. Secures, labels, and places 1:1 observation
- patient belonging in storage area. Assures transfer of patient belongings with
- patient.
- Mental health responsibilities: Observes for and responds to emotional needs of
- patients and/or significant others within scope of practice. Reports observations
- to primary nurse. Adheres to 1:1 observation responsibility as needed, utilizing
- the companion flow sheet. Monitors patients who are at risk for acting out
- behavior, assists RN, MHP, or Psych Technician in coordinating care for
- psychiatric patients. Performs patient and patient belonging search and seizure
- in a discreet manner for items that could pose a threat of physical harm to the
- patient, visitors, or caregivers. Secures, labels and places 1:1 observation
- patient belonging in storage area. Applies physical restraints, soft and leather.
- Responds to overhead Security Emergency Alert. Interface with security as
- needed to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
- Non-patient unit specific duties. Performs urine QCs, checks all refrigerator
- logs, updates whiteboards, assists with PCT assignments and breaks.
- Participates in the orientation of new employees; fulfills preceptor
- responsibilities and assists in the completion of Orientation Packets for new
- technicians; completes Tchnician Orientation Evaluation form; stock supplies;
- transports patients. Performs other duties and errands as requested. Informs
- Charge Nurse of supply levels and areas that require repair. Removes EMS
- equipment and returns to EMS equipment room. Performs daily QCs.
- Area specific duties; Completes area specific checklist. Greets EMS in assigned
- room, assisting with patient transfer to stretcher, placement into gown, v/s,
- monitor and EKG as directed. Follows through on patient care; obtains blood
- per policy, returns unused blood and/or obtains additional units as needed;
- maintains cervical spine precautions. Assists RN/Physician/PA with procedures
- including splinting, chest tube, and DPL, Level 1 set up, open thoracotomy, NG
- placement, central line/arterial line, Heliport duties and safety, overhead
- Security Alerts, Code STEMI, ambulation aids, air cast, splinting, bandaging,
- dressing, sterile technique, suture preparation, assist with IV insertion and
- venipuncture; secure patient for examination or procedure; age specific
- techniques and equipment as necessary.
- Patient Disposition: Assists patients to dress, assists patients and
- family/significant other to car, assists EMS with transferring patients to vehicles.
- Prepares and transports patients to nursing floors or other areas as necessary.
- Assures the return and cleans all department equipment used for patient
- transport. Witness signature on operating room consents. Secures belongings in
- patient belonging bag and completes the inventory of personal effects
- documentation for admitted patients or those transferred to the operating
- room. Replenish depleted equipment from room in preparation for the next
- patient.

- Ability to operate as part of a team, alongside physicians and nurses
- Proficiency in computer-based data management programs and information
- systems
- BLS
- Float to NMC when needed
- EMT certification/CNA preferred
