About The Role

Job Summary

The Engineer II, Software Automation is responsible for developing, executing, and maintaining scalable test automation frameworks and infrastructure for complex, distributed systems — including microservice-based software platforms, on-prem and cloud deployments, and the in-house and third-party devices they integrate with. This role is a key technical contributor within the Systems Test Engineering organization, developing automation solutions that improve test efficiency, reliability, repeatability, and coverage.

The ideal candidate applies knowledge of software verification and validation methodologies combined with strong software engineering skills.

Please note this is a full-time onsite position in Irvine, CA.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and maintain scalable automated test frameworks and support infrastructure for instrument and system-level testing.
  • Develop reusable test libraries, device interfaces, protocol libraries, utilities, and common automation components across instrument platforms and downstream system integrations.
  • Build hardware-in-the-loop solutions (software simulators and emulators) for devices and external systems to enable isolated and reproducible testing.
  • Develop automation for system, integration, functional, regression, communication protocol, performance, and reliability testing across microservice-based software and hybrid on-prem/cloud infrastructure.
  • Validate protocol and data integrations (e.g., HL7, WCTP, and other device communication protocols) between in-house and third-party devices and downstream system services.
  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines to support continuous validation and rapid feedback.
  • Develop solutions for automated test execution, data collection, logging, reporting, and results analysis.
  • Participate in the Quality process by producing verification records and traceability of testing to requirements
  • Assist with setup and maintenance of test environment and laboratory equipment, both physical and virtual
  • Partners with Test, Software, Systems, Hardware, and Quality Engineering teams to develop test strategies and improve product testability and observability.
  • Contribute to system and product test strategies with an emphasis on automation, repeatability, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Collaborate with development teams during product design to improve system testability, observability, interfaces, communication protocols, and diagnostic capabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2-3+ years of experience in software development, test automation, software verification, or a related engineering discipline
  • Working knowledge of software verification and validation methodologies
  • Experience with automated testing tools and scripting languages (Python, C#, C++, Java, or similar)
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD systems, and modern software development practices
  • Familiarity with defect tracking and test management tools
  • Understanding of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Agile development methodologies
  • Strong debugging, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within the medical device or other regulated industry
  • Familiarity with IEC 62304, ISO 13485, FDA Quality System Regulation, or other applicable software quality standards
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated build/test environments
  • Experience with virtualization platforms like VMware ESXi
  • Experience with test frameworks such as pytest or TestNG.
  • Familiarity with healthcare interoperability or messaging standards (e.g., HL7, WCTP) or other structured data/protocol formats
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and container/orchestration tooling (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)

Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related technical discipline.

Compensation + Benefits: The anticipated range for this position is $80,000 - $105,000. Actual placement within the range is dependent on multiple factors, including but not limited to skills, education, and experience. This position also qualifies for up to 10% annual bonus based on Company, department, and individual performance. Physical requirements/Work Environment

This position primarily works in a laboratory environment. It requires frequent sitting, standing, and walking. Daily use of a computer and other computing and digital devices is required. May stand for extended periods when facilitating meetings or walking in the facilities.
