About The Role

Vertiv is seeking a Senior Pre-Sales Engineer to support high-impact data center and mission-critical projects with a focus on low-voltage (LV) power distribution systems, including UL 891 switchboards and UL 1558 switchgear. This role operates in a fast-paced, engineering-driven environment where technical accuracy, proposal quality, and cross-functional coordination are critical to winning and delivering mission-critical infrastructure.

This position serves as the senior technical lead for pre-sales ETO engineering activities and is responsible for driving front-end technical alignment, execution readiness, handoff quality, standardization, and engineering process improvements across electrical and mechanical design support functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Front-End Technical Coordination: Lead coordination activities between Applications Engineering, Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, Sourcing, and Project Management.
  • Pre-Sales ETO Engineering: Lead and support ETO engineering activities for LV switchboards, switchgear, power distribution equipment, and custom engineered assemblies.
  • Technical Design Direction: Provide technical direction and support for electrical and mechanical design development during the quotation and proposal phase.
  • Customer Specification Review: Review customer specifications, one-line diagrams, technical requirements, and project documentation to ensure compliance with customer expectations and applicable standards.
  • Opportunity Support: Support engineered-to-order (ETO) and standard platform opportunities across multiple customer segments.
  • Code and Compliance Oversight: Ensure quotation designs align with UL 891, UL 1558, NEC, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Design Development Support: Support development of conceptual layouts, GA drawings, preliminary BOMs, control architectures, and technical submittal documentation.
  • Technical Scope Validation: Review and validate technical scope, component selections, short circuit ratings, bus sizing, protection schemes, metering requirements, and mechanical configurations.
  • Handoff Quality: Drive clean order handoff quality and support execution readiness prior to Design Engineering release.
  • Technical Risk Assessment: Lead technical risk assessments related to manufacturability, compliance, sourcing, schedule, and customer requirements during the quotation and proposal phase.
  • Sourcing Coordination: Coordinate with sourcing and supply chain teams on long lead item considerations, component availability, approved manufacturer lists, and alternate component strategies.
  • Customer Technical Engagement: Support customer technical review meetings and provide technical clarification throughout the proposal process.
  • Submittal Package Support: Support completion and accuracy of initial customer submittal packages during the pre-sales phase.
  • Proposal Timeline Management: Support quotation schedules and proposal response timelines through effective prioritization and coordination.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on cycle time reduction, quotation accuracy, BOM accuracy, standardization, handoff quality, and design efficiency.
  • Metrics and Documentation: Support development and maintenance of engineering KPIs, proposal tracking metrics, and technical documentation processes.
  • Technical Mentorship: Provide technical mentoring and guidance to electrical and mechanical pre-sales design resources.
  • Downstream Rework Reduction: Support reduction of downstream engineering revisions, redesign efforts, and execution delays through improved front-end technical validation.
  • Project Handoff: Support transition of awarded projects into execution teams through structured technical handoff processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred); Engineering Technology or related technical discipline accepted.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in low voltage power distribution, switchgear, switchboard, or engineered electrical systems.
  • Strong understanding of LV power distribution systems, electrical protection, control systems, and mechanical enclosure design.
  • Strong knowledge of UL 891, UL 1558, NEC, and related industry standards.
  • Experience supporting data center, industrial, utility, or mission critical infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to review electrical one-lines, schematics, GA layouts, and BOM structures.
  • Experience working within ETO manufacturing environments.
  • Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and cross-functional coordination skills.
  • Experience with ERP, PDM, and engineering documentation systems preferred.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with IFS, Oracle, Vault, AutoCAD, SEE Electrical, or equivalent engineering systems.
  • Experience supporting large scale data center infrastructure projects.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, design for manufacturability, and cost optimization.
  • Familiarity with seismic, thermal, short circuit, and compliance testing requirements.
  • Direct experience with UL 891 switchboard or UL 1558 switchgear design, including drawing package development, breaker schedules, single line diagrams, and BOM structures.
  • Familiarity with LV protection and control systems including overcurrent coordination, arc flash mitigation (NEC 240.87), automatic transfer schemes, and metering and communications integration.

Work Environment

  • Based in Anderson, SC with occasional travel to manufacturing facilities and customer sites as required.
