What’s this team like at Etsy?

The Payments Product team operates at the intersection of trust, growth, and financial infrastructure. The team is organized into five specialized squads, each with deep ownership over a distinct dimension of the payments experience:

  • Buyer Payment Experience focuses on how buyers pay — from checkout conversion and alternative payment method (APM) expansion (Apple Pay, Affirm, Revolut, CashApp) to guest checkout optimization and payment-related messaging.
  • Money Movement works on the infrastructure that keeps payments flowing: authorization rate optimization, decline reattempts, payout redundancy and the path to 100% EP100 uptime, and launching new payment rails globally.
  • Payments & Seller Compliance owns Etsy's regulatory and compliance obligations — seller identity verification, PCI compliance, and fraud-adjacent risk controls that protect both the marketplace and its sellers.
  • Seller Financial Experience owns what it feels like to be a seller managing money on Etsy: financial holds, payment account design, manual billing, and the seller ledger — tools used by millions of sellers worldwide.
  • Tax manages Etsy's global tax obligations, navigating marketplace facilitator laws, withholding tax, import fees, digital services tax, and 1099 reporting — in a regulatory landscape that never stops shifting.

The culture is rigorous and collaborative. PMs run tight discovery cycles, work closely with stakeholders from day one, and are always expected to always keep the customer at the heart of their work.

What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Setting and evolving multi-year payments strategy — translating Etsy's North Star of accelerating the marketplace flywheel through trusted financial experiences into quarterly roadmaps across five squads.
  • Representing Payments in senior cross-functional forums with Legal, Finance, Accounting, and the exec team — on issues ranging from tax policy and regulatory response to payment network relationships and financial risk.
  • Driving high-stakes product decisions: for example, weighing in on which payment methods to launch next and in which markets, how to design financial holds in ways that don't erode seller trust, and how to balance auth rate interventions with COR.
  • Managing regulatory and compliance timelines with real financial consequences — including seller reverification programs protecting hundreds of millions in exposure, 1099 infrastructure, withholding tax implementations, and evolving digital sales tax requirements across multiple countries.
  • Hiring, developing, and retaining product managers across IC and manager levels; coaching squad leads on navigating ambiguity, sizing trade-offs, and running effective discovery.
  • Serving as connective tissue between Payments and the broader Marketplace: ensuring buyer-facing checkout improvements, seller financial tools, and platform investments reinforce each other and ladder to company goals.
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are

  • 10+ years building and scaling product teams in payments, fintech, or financial services with at least 4 years of managing Product Managers
  • Deep experience in payments, fintech, or financial infrastructure — with working knowledge of payment rails, authorization flows, compliance frameworks (PCI, KYC/AML), and/or tax obligations
  • Proven ability to set multi-year product strategy and translate it into executable roadmaps across large, cross-functional teams
  • Track record of shipping complex, high-stakes products in regulated environments — balancing growth objectives with legal, compliance, and risk constraints
  • Strong financial acumen; able to model trade-offs, size opportunities, and present confidently to senior finance and legal stakeholders
  • Experience working across global markets, including navigating varying regulatory requirements by geography
  • Exceptional cross-functional influence — comfortable leading without authority across Engineering, Legal, Finance, Design, and Operations
