Amentum is seeking a Marine Machinist to support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. The Marine Machinist will be responsible for performing precision machining, mechanical repairs, installation, and maintenance of marine machinery and equipment. This position supports the operational readiness of marine vessels and facilities by ensuring mechanical systems and components are properly maintained, repaired, and fabricated to required specifications.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other precision equipment.
  • Machine, Fabricate, repair, and modify parts and components for marine systems and equipment.
  • Perform alignment, installation, repair, and maintenance of marine machinery, including pumps, valves, engines, gear mechanisms, and hydraulic systems.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and equipment manuals.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical issues affecting marine vessels and equipment.
  • Assist with installation and overhaul of mechanical systems in accordance with technical specifications and established procedures.
  • Use precision measurement tools, including micrometers, calipers, and gauges, to ensure components meet required specifications.
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance to reduce equipment downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed work, parts used, inspections, and maintenance activities.
  • Follow applicable safety standards, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and marine personnel to complete repairs and resolve technical issues.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient work environment.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the position.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years of experience as a Marine Machinist or in a related mechanical trade.
  • Proficiency operating machine tools, including lathes, grinders, and milling machines.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing marine machinery and mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, precision machining, and maintenance practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety.
  • Ability to successfully meet contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout deployment.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices and proper handling of equipment and materials.
  • Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
  • Passport must be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
  • Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
  • Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout the duration of deployment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
  • Must read, speak, and comprehend English to the extent that they can perform the contract requirements and comply with installation emergency procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce
  • A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle. Valid country driver’s license. and passport.
  • Certification or formal training in machining, marine systems, or related fields.
  • Experience with marine vessel systems, including propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and shipboard support equipment.
  • Experience working with hydraulics, pneumatics, and precision alignment tools.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines and procedures.

Working Environment

This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in offices, industrial warehouses, ports, airfields, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.

Physical Requirements

Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
