Medical Assistants (MA) in the medical office setting supports providers by delivering direct and indirect patient care in a professional, courteous, and efficient manner. Overview

The Medical Assistant (MA) supports providers by delivering direct and indirect patient care in a professional, courteous, and efficient manner. The MA assists with clinical procedures, maintains accurate patient documentation, and provides administrative support to ensure smooth clinic operations. This role functions within the defined scope of practice and under the supervision of licensed healthcare providers, while upholding Mercy's mission, values, and standards of care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet, room, and prepare patients for appointments.
  • Obtain and document vital signs and patient information.
  • Collect and update medical and medication histories.
  • Assist providers during examinations and procedures.
  • Perform basic diagnostic testing, including urine dipstick testing, glucose testing, and EKGs, as deemed competent.
  • Accurately document patient care and clinical activities in the electronic health record.
  • Reinforce patient education as directed by providers and nurses.
  • Maintain exam room cleanliness, organization, and supply levels.
  • Assist with scheduling diagnostic tests, specialist referrals, and follow-up appointments.
  • Support front office operations, including answering phones, patient check-in/check-out, fax management, and document scanning.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and staff meetings.
  • Follow all infection prevention, patient safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform additional duties within the scope of the Medical Assistant role as assigned.
