Position Description
The Barrick RoW Team are seeking to recruit an UG Connectivity Specialist – RoW .
The UG Connectivity Specialist – RoW is responsible for leading the design, implementation, governance, integration and performance management of underground connectivity solutions across the RoW regions. The role will support safe, reliable and scalable underground communications infrastructure that enables real-time operational visibility, equipment connectivity, worker safety systems, mine automation, remote operations and digital mining initiatives across regional underground assets.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Actively encourage, motivate and demonstrate a culture of safety leadership.
- In collaboration with all stakeholders, provide governance and oversight of UG connectivity project implementation across the region.
- Actively participate and provide operational guidance and input into the development of commercial agreements for UG connectivity projects.
- Complete audits on site compliance with UG connectivity projects implementation, in line with company policies and expectations.
- Engage in innovation and technology forums to stay at the forefront of innovation and technology in the mining industry.
- Collaborate and assist with the integration of the connectivity solutions with all stakeholders.
- Conduct risk assessments and management of change processes to ensure the successful implementation and adoption of the UG connectivity solutions.
- Lead the implementation of UG connectivity projects.
- Develop and maintain regional underground connectivity standards, implementation roadmaps, governance frameworks, and minimum technical requirements aligned to operational, safety and business needs.
- Provide subject matter expertise on underground communications technologies including fibre backbone networks, leaky feeder, Wi-Fi, mesh networks, private LTE/5G, radio systems, telemetry, IoT sensors and tracking systems.
- Partner with site operations, mining, engineering, automation, ICT/OT, safety, security, procurement, and vendor teams to ensure connectivity solutions are fit-for-purpose, interoperable, cyber-secure and maintainable in underground mining environments.
- Oversee network design reviews, coverage planning, commissioning, acceptance testing, performance monitoring, and handover processes to ensure reliable voice, data, tracking, safety and operational technology services underground.
- Support business case development, vendor evaluations, project scoping, budget inputs, schedule tracking, risk management, and benefits realisation for underground connectivity programmes.
- Establish operational support models, service level expectations, maintenance practices, change controls and continuous improvement initiatives for deployed connectivity solutions.
Qualification Requirements
- Tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Telecommunications, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Network Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Relevant professional certifications will be advantageous, such as Cisco, Microsoft, CompTIA Network+, wireless networking, LTE/5G, industrial networking, OT cybersecurity, or project management certifications.
- Formal training or demonstrated experience in underground communications infrastructure, mine automation, operational technology or industrial control network environments will be highly regarded.
Experience and Skills Requirements
- 5 years’ + relevant experience in world class mechanised underground mining assets, with exposure to regional or multi-site technology implementation preferred.
- Strong knowledge of underground communications architecture, including fibre, Ethernet, leaky feeder, Wi-Fi, mesh, radio, LTE/5G, distributed antenna systems, telemetry, tracking and industrial IoT solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate connectivity solutions with mining systems such as fleet management, automation platforms, dispatch, ventilation-on-demand, personnel tracking, collision avoidance, emergency response, control rooms, and data platforms.
- Understanding of OT/IT convergence, industrial network design, cybersecurity principles, redundancy, uptime, bandwidth management, latency, network monitoring, and support models in mission-critical environments.
- Experience with project governance, vendor management, commercial input, commissioning, acceptance testing, stakeholder engagement, change management and benefits tracking.
- Strong safety leadership, communication, influencing, and problem-solving skills.
