About The Role

[What the role is]

Republic Polytechnic's School of Engineering (SEG), in collaboration with the School of Science (SAS), invites applications for a full-time Research Staff on a 12-month contract to support the DGF-funded project, "Smart Water Treatment in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) for Land-based Fish Farms."

This applied R&D project focuses on developing an innovative smart water treatment system to improve water quality, reduce ammonia, pathogens, turbidity, biofilm, and algae, and enhance the sustainability of land-based aquaculture.

The project integrates two proprietary technologies

  • DuoBioSonic – Dual-frequency ultrasonic cavitation for controlling pathogens, algae, biofilm, and turbidity.
  • AquAPEX – Multicellular graphite electrolysis for ammonia and nitrogen removal.

The successful candidate will contribute to prototype development, laboratory research, system integration, water quality analysis, field validation at commercial fish farms, and technology commercialisation.

[What you will be working on]

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct applied research on smart water treatment technologies for recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).
  • Perform laboratory experiments, aquaculture field trials, water quality monitoring, microbiological testing, and data analysis.
  • Develop, integrate, and evaluate prototype systems, sensors, and instrumentation.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to support technology validation and deployment.
  • Supervise final-year project students and interns involved in the project.
  • Support intellectual property (IP) development, technology transfer, and commercialisation activities.
  • Prepare technical reports, journal publications, presentations, and research grant proposals.
  • Manage laboratory equipment & consumables, procurement, safety compliance, and research products.

[What we are looking for]

  • Qualification in Environmental Engineering/Science, Water Engineering, Aquaculture Science, Marine/Ocean Engineering/Science, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Applied Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Biomedical Science, Food Science, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Interest in water treatment, aquaculture, water quality monitoring, microbiology, and applied research.
  • Knowledge of sensors, instrumentation, experimental design, data acquisition, and data analysis is an advantage.
  • Experience in laboratory testing, microbiological analysis, aquaculture, or water quality assessment is preferred.
  • Self-motivated, hands-on, and able to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams of researchers, engineers, scientists and students.
  • Good report/technical writing skills.
  • Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply.
