Sous Chef

Join the kitchen leadership team at The Tote & Furnace - a well-known local venue in the heart of Trentham, Upper Hutt, offering a busy bistro, sports bar atmosphere, events, live entertainment and a strong community following.

We’re currently looking for an experienced Sous Chef to support the day-to-day operation of the kitchen and help lead a strong, service-focused brigade. This role is ideal for a chef who thrives in fast-paced hospitality environments, enjoys mentoring junior staff and takes pride in delivering consistent, quality food during high-volume service.

The Tote is a true local institution, known for its pub classics, steaks, pizzas, live sport and weekly events, creating a dynamic kitchen environment with a varied and consistent trade base.

About the role

• Support the Head Chef in leading day-to-day kitchen operations
• Lead service and maintain quality standards during busy trade periods
• Assist with ordering, stock control and minimising wastage
• Support roster management and kitchen organisation
• Train, mentor and develop junior chefs and kitchen staff
• Maintain food safety, cleanliness and compliance standards
• Contribute to menu execution and operational improvements

What we’re looking for

• Previous experience as a Sous Chef or strong Senior CDP ready to step up
• Experience working in high-volume kitchens
• Strong communication and leadership skills
• Ability to stay calm and organised under pressure
• Sound understanding of food safety and kitchen operations
• Positive attitude with a hands-on approach to leadership
• Flexible availability across nights, weekends and public holidays
