About The Role

Primary Duties

General Accounting, Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Analyze complex financial transactions, account activity, and accounting records to determine appropriate accounting treatment in accordance with applicable accounting principles, fiscal rules, CSU System policies, and University procedures.
  • Perform general ledger account analysis and reconciliation activities; identify discrepancies, determine necessary accounting corrections or account adjustments, and ensure the accuracy and integrity of assigned accounting records.
  • Analyze financial information and accounting activity to prepare, review, and authorize journal entries, account adjustments, accruals, and correcting entries.
  • Perform month-end and fiscal year-end accounting activities for assigned accounts, including adjusting, closing, balancing, and reconciling accounts and resolving accounting discrepancies.
  • Prepare and interpret recurring and non-routine financial reports, schedules, and analyses for departmental leadership and management decision-making.
  • Evaluate accounting activity and financial results to identify trends, risks, reporting concerns, and opportunities for improved fiscal stewardship and operational effectiveness.
  • Review accounting records and transactions for compliance with accounting standards, internal controls, fiscal regulations, CSU System requirements, and University policies; determine and implement appropriate corrective action when necessary.
  • Maintain accountability for the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of assigned financial records and accounting processes.

Accounting Systems, Internal Controls & Process Development

  • Evaluate accounting procedures, workflows, and financial processes to ensure accurate and compliant accounting operations.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement improvements to accounting procedures, reporting methodologies, reconciliation processes, and internal controls.
  • Analyze operational and accounting issues, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions to improve efficiency, compliance, and reporting accuracy.
  • Assist with the implementation, testing, enhancement, and optimization of financial systems, accounting tools, and reporting solutions.
  • Maintain and evaluate internal control structures to safeguard University assets and ensure reliable financial reporting.

Accounts Receivable Accounting & Oversight

  • Serve as the an accountant responsible for assigned accounts receivable functions and related accounting activities.
  • Analyze receivable balances, billing activity, collection trends, and account status to determine appropriate accounting actions and account resolution strategies.
  • Review and authorize receivable-related adjustments, corrections, write-off recommendations, credits, and other accounting transactions within established authority.
  • Reconcile accounts receivable subsidiary records to the general ledger and determine actions necessary to resolve discrepancies.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of receivable processes and recommend improvements that strengthen internal controls, compliance, and fiscal accountability.

Ancillary Duties

Professional Consultation, Compliance & Special Projects

  • Provide professional accounting guidance and consultation to departments, employees, and stakeholders regarding accounting procedures, fiscal requirements, financial reporting, and compliance matters.
  • Interpret accounting policies, fiscal regulations, and University procedures to advise stakeholders on appropriate accounting practices and financial decision-making.
  • Participate in audits, fiscal reviews, compliance initiatives, and special accounting projects by researching issues, analyzing financial information, and developing recommendations.
  • Participate in professional development activities to maintain and expand professional accounting knowledge and expertise.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, Mathematics, Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting, or a closely related field.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), accounting theory, and professional accounting practices.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting, account reconciliation processes, internal controls, and audit principles.
  • Knowledge of applicable fiscal rules, regulatory requirements, and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze accounting transactions and records to determine appropriate accounting treatment and corrective actions.
  • Ability to independently identify, investigate, and resolve accounting discrepancies.
  • Ability to prepare, review, and approve journal entries and account adjustments.
  • Ability to interpret and apply accounting principles, regulations, policies, and procedures to complex financial situations.
  • Ability to prepare and present financial reports, analyses, and recommendations.
  • One (1) year of professional accounting experience involving analysis, account reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, account adjustments, compliance review, and month-end or fiscal year-end accounting activities.
  • Experience analyzing financial data and determining necessary accounting corrections or adjustments.
  • Experience utilizing accounting systems and financial reporting tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or other relevant accounting certification.
  • Knowledge of governmental, higher education, or public-sector accounting standards and practices.
  • Knowledge of Fund Accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of accounts receivable accounting, billing systems, collections, and revenue recognition practices.
  • Ability to evaluate accounting processes and recommend improvements to internal controls, efficiency, and reporting procedures.
  • Ability to develop financial analyses, forecasts, and management reports to support decision-making.
  • Ability to interpret complex accounting regulations and implement compliant accounting practices.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including data analysis and reporting functions.
  • Two (2) or more years of professional accounting experience.
  • Experience performing month-end and fiscal year-end closing responsibilities, including adjusting, balancing, and reconciling accounts.
  • Experience preparing standard and ad hoc financial reports and analyses for management.
  • Experience reviewing accounting records and transactions for compliance with accounting standards, fiscal rules, and internal controls.
  • Experience with accounts receivable accounting, reconciliations, debt adjustments, collections, and account analysis.
  • Experience evaluating and improving accounting procedures, internal controls, and financial reporting processes.
  • Experience working in higher education, governmental, nonprofit, or other complex institutional environments.
  • Experience using Workday, Banner, Oracle, or similar enterprise accounting systems.

Salary

$59,000 to $73,750
