Essential Duties
- Reviews and analyzes financial transactions to identify and properly account for newly acquired capital assets; maintains accurate University capital asset records and performs monthly and annual reconciliations of capital assets and related general ledger accounts
- Communicates and collaborates with departments across ASU locations to obtain and verify information related to newly acquired assets, asset transfers and disposals, and the physical inventory of existing assets.
- Performs a broad range of accounting duties, including preparing and posting journal entries, reconciling balance sheet and general ledger accounts, analyzing financial data, researching discrepancies, and responding to accounting-related questions from University departments and staff.
- Reviews and approves departmental accounting transactions and supplier invoices within established authorization limits; researches and resolves discrepancies or incomplete documentation as needed.
- Assists with the University’s biennial physical inventory of capital assets, including coordinating with departments, researching and resolving inventory discrepancies, and ensuring asset records are updated appropriately.
- Reviews transactions and supporting documentation to ensure appropriate accounting treatment and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) requirements, University policies and procedures, and established internal controls.
- Supports internal and external audits.
- Maintains current knowledge of applicable accounting standards, laws, regulations, University policies, and professional guidance relevant to capital asset accounting; researches and evaluates accounting guidance as assigned.
- Assists with training, assigning work, and providing day-to-day guidance to student employees supporting Capital Asset Management activities.
- Participates in special projects, financial analyses, and other accounting duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- Evidence of a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.
- Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, financial schedules, and detailed financial reports.
- Experience with capital assets or fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation, transfers, adjustments, and disposals.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel to organize and analyze financial data, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables, and other data analysis functions.
- Experience in utilizing accounting software and performing account reconciliations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and standard accounting practices.
- Experience interpreting and applying accounting policies, procedures, and guidelines to financial transactions.
- Experience communicating accounting or financial information to individuals with varying levels of financial knowledge.
- Experience researching and resolving questions from customers or departments in a high-volume, service-focused environment.
Working Environment
- Work in an office setting and use office equipment (i.e., computers, printers, copiers, calculators, telephones).
- Sit or stand for extended periods of time, travel moderate distances to perform work, use hands/fingers for repetitive motions.
- Communicate to perform essential duties.Read-interpret written and oral instructions/directions.
- May require lifting of items weighing up to 25 lbs.
