Job Summary
The Chief Ethics Officer (CEthO) is responsible for establishing and promoting a strong ethical culture across the organization. This role oversees ethics programs, codes of conduct, and integrity frameworks to ensure that all business activities align with legal requirements, regulatory expectations, and the highest ethical standards.
The CEthO plays a critical role in fostering trust, transparency, and accountability while managing ethical risks and supporting long-term organizational integrity.
Key Responsibilities
- Ethics Strategy & Framework
- Develop and implement the organization's ethics and integrity strategy
- Establish and maintain the code of conduct and ethical guidelines
- Align ethics programs with regulatory and governance frameworks
- Promote ethical decision-making across all levels
- Ethics Programs & Culture
- Drive initiatives to build and sustain an ethical organizational culture
- Promote awareness of ethical standards and values
- Embed ethics into daily business operations and decision-making
- Monitor organizational culture and ethical climate
- Whistleblowing & Investigations
- Oversee whistleblower programs and reporting mechanisms
- Ensure confidentiality, protection, and proper handling of reports
- Lead or oversee investigations into ethical misconduct
- Ensure timely resolution and appropriate corrective actions
- Policy Development & Compliance Alignment
- Develop and maintain ethics-related policies and procedures
- Align ethics programs with compliance, legal, and risk frameworks
- Ensure consistent application of ethical standards across business units
- Support regulatory compliance from an ethics perspective
- Ethics Risk Management
- Identify, assess, and mitigate ethical risks
- Monitor conflicts of interest, fraud risks, and misconduct
- Implement controls to prevent unethical practices
- Collaborate with risk, compliance, and audit functions
- Training & Awareness
- Develop and deliver ethics training programs
- Ensure employees understand ethical standards and expectations
- Promote continuous awareness of integrity and compliance
- Support leadership in reinforcing ethical behavior
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Advise executive leadership and Board on ethics-related matters
- Coordinate with regulators, auditors, and external stakeholders
- Enhance transparency and trust with customers and partners
- Represent the organization in ethics and governance forums
- Leadership & Team Management
- Lead and develop ethics and integrity teams
- Foster a culture of accountability and ethical leadership
- Support talent development and succession planning
- Drive cross-functional collaboration on ethics initiatives
Key Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Law, Business Administration, Ethics, Finance, or related field
- Professional certifications in ethics, compliance, or governance are highly desirable
Experience
- 12–18+ years of experience in ethics, compliance, legal, or risk roles
- Proven experience in senior leadership roles (e.g., Chief Ethics Officer, Head of Ethics, Compliance Leader)
- Strong background in banking, financial services, insurance, or investment sectors
Skills & Competencies
- Deep understanding of ethics frameworks and corporate governance
- Strong knowledge of regulatory and compliance environments
- Expertise in investigations and whistleblower management
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement
