Job Summary

Operates computed tomography (CT) scanner to produce cross-sectional radiographs of patient's body for diagnostic purposes. Administers contrast media orally and/or intravenously as ordered.

  1. Environmental Demands: Radiation exposure hazard controlled. Exposure to infection and disease.
  2. Essential Physical and Cognitive Demands, Manual Dexterity: On feet most of day. Lifting and positioning of patients. Moving of heavy mobile equipment.

C. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Demonstrates the required job specific technical/professional knowledge, skills and abilities. *

  1. Demonstrate competency in all exams performed (i.e. positioning, proper labeling, patient identification, left/right markers, follows CT protocols, etc.)
  2. Calculates the number of scans to be obtained, amount of IV contrast to be used based on patient size and operates the CT, injects contrast ensuring the required images were obtained as ordered by Physician/Radiologist. Consults with Radiologist to review and ascertain whether additional scanning is required, when needed.
  3. Performs trauma and other high-risk radiologic procedures in CT.
  4. Prepare CT room prior to first patient (i.e. room stocked for needed equipment and supplies) and keep room and work area neat and clean at all times.
  5. Explain exam/procedure to relieve anxiety and prepares patient for Radiologic I CT

examinations.

  1. Monitors patient condition by directly observing the patient during the examination, recognizing and reporting abnormal changes in the patient's condition. Able to assess patient pain interfering with Imaging procedure; make appropriate physician/RN contact for intervention.
  2. Determines the most suitable anatomical posture and positions and shields patient accordingly.

Adhere to all Radiation safety requirements, ALARA.

  1. Interacts professionally with patient/family/coworkers. Must possess the ability to work in a high stress area and maintain a positive attitude.
  2. Complete exam, review images and send to PACS system for Radiologist reading.
  3. Completes all work or completes a proper hand-off before clocking out and leaving.
  4. Performs duties according to ARRT standards I ACR standards I Nyack Hospital protocols.
  5. Set up room, sterile trays and injector, prep patient and set up sterile field as needed.
  6. Responsible for safe handling of equipment.
  7. Completed IV Contrast Screening forms and Metformin Patient Education form when required.
  8. Wears Identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  9. Attends departmental in-services and Mega Education and staff meetings as scheduled.
  10. Attends at least 4 monthly department meetings, reads and signs off on meeting minutes when not in attendance.
  11. Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
  12. Must be able to rotate hospital holidays. Name will be placed on “Mandate” rotation list to cover open shifts when necessary as per CWA union contract.
  13. Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital.

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree Required
  • One year general radiographic experience
  • One year CT experience
  • ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Upon Hire Required
  • ARRT-CT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists - Computed Tomography - AMERICAN REGISTERY OF RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGISTS (ARRT)
  • RADIOL Licensed Radiologist - New York State Dept of Health Upon Hire Required
  • BLS - American Heart Association within 90 Days Required
  • IV Certification - training available onsite within 90 Days Required
