Job Summary**

The Dominion Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment used in trenching, excavation, and backfilling activities for utility construction projects, primarily focusing on underground gas and electric infrastructure. This role ensures adherence to safety protocols, project specifications, and quality standards while maintaining equipment and supporting overall project goals.

Job Responsibilities**

  • Operate various heavy equipment, including but not limited to excavators, backhoes, trenchers, dozers, and skid steers, in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform pre-shift inspections and routine maintenance on equipment, including checking fluid levels, greasing, and identifying potential mechanical issues.
  • Dig trenches to specified depths and widths, backfill excavations, and grade surfaces according to project plans and blueprints.
  • Load and unload materials, including pipes, conduits, and aggregates, using heavy equipment.
  • Collaborate with foremen, superintendents, and other crew members to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs of equipment usage, maintenance, and work performed.
  • Identify and report any safety hazards or equipment malfunctions immediately.
  • Assist with manual labor tasks when not operating equipment, as needed.
  • Ensure proper care and cleanliness of equipment and work areas.
  • Follow all environmental regulations and best practices.

Job Qualifications**

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of verifiable experience operating heavy equipment in a construction or utility environment, specifically with trenching and excavation.
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record preferred.
  • Proficiency in operating multiple types of heavy equipment, including excavators, backhoes, and trenchers.
  • Knowledge of underground utility construction practices and safety procedures, particularly related to gas and electric lines.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and construction plans.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA safety regulations and best practices.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
  • Willingness to travel and work overtime as required by project demands.

R.B. Hinkle is an underground and overhead utility contractor, specializing in the installation of conduit, manholes and streetlights through trenching, directional, drilling and moling.
