Part-Time Legal Assistant — Prisoners’ Rights

About The Role
ABOUT THE ROLE
The ACLU of Nevada is seeking a part-time Legal Assistant to support our prisoners’ rights litigation. This role is ideal for someone detail-oriented and organized, with an interest in issues impacting incarcerated people. Individuals who have been directly impacted by the criminal legal system are encouraged to apply. Part-time employees are not eligible for benefits.
Hours: 10 hours per week (max)
Location: North Las Vegas, NV; in-office
Compensation: $20/hour
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage physical and electronic case files using Microsoft SharePoint and Clio Manage
- Track administrative exhaustion requirements
- Track correspondence with incarcerated clients
- Request and organize records from correctional facilities
- Maintain client intake records and update case status trackers
- Handle scheduling, billing support, and general administrative tasks
- Communicate professionally and sensitively with incarcerated people and correctional staff
- Maintain confidentiality of client information
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; comfort corresponding with incarcerated individuals
- High level of discretion and ability to handle sensitive/confidential information
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to deadlines
- Experience with Microsoft Applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive)
- Ability to work independently
Preferred (not required)
- Prior experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or in a legal office
- Familiarity with civil rights litigation, criminal law, or corrections systems
- Spanish (or other language) fluency
- Experience with public records requests
- Experience conducting basic legal research on relevant statutes and case law
- Coursework or background in law, criminal justice, or social work
