Job Description
The Opportunity
We're looking for an experienced Backend Software Engineer, ideally with a background in FinTech, to help build and maintain the platform that powers Flywire's industry-leading payment engine — processing hundreds of millions of dollars every day.
You'll join a team designing new functionality and improving existing capabilities to enhance speed, cost efficiency, and scalability. We value collaborative problem-solving, pragmatic design, and a shared sense of ownership over what we ship. If you care deeply about code quality and want your work to have real-world financial impact, this role is for you.
Responsibilities
Write clean, testable, secure, maintainable, and extensible backend code across payment processing systems
Investigate and resolve complex bugs and production issues with precision and care
Work on non-trivial engineering problems that require deep evaluation of data, system behavior, and tradeoffs
Understand and improve application scalability and performance proactively
Contribute to technical design discussions and propose pragmatic solutions in line with team standards
Collaborate with Product Managers, QA, SRE, and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality outcomes
Support and participate in the hiring process by helping identify and engage strong engineering talent
Drive AI readiness and adoption — leverage Claude via AWS Bedrock for AI-assisted development, intelligent code review, automated documentation, and smart observability across payment workflows
Use AWS Bedrock's enterprise controls (IAM, CloudWatch, VPC, audit logs) to ensure AI usage remains secure, compliant, and fully observable within production environments
Qualifications
Here's what we are looking for
Required
4+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong backend focus
Solid experience designing and building distributed, high-throughput systems
Good understanding of TDD, BDD, and CI/CD best practices
Strong command of OOP principles, clean code, and system design patterns
Hands-on experience with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and messaging/caching systems (Redis, AMQP)
Strong grasp of OOP principles, clean code, and common design patterns
Collaborative working style across QA, Product, SRE, and business teams
AI readiness: Hands-on experience or strong familiarity with AWS Bedrock and invoking foundation models (particularly Anthropic Claude) via the Bedrock Runtime API or Converse API; ability to evaluate and responsibly apply AI tooling in production engineering contexts
Nice to Have
- Experience in FinTech, payments, compliance, fraud & risk, treasury, or FX domains
- Familiarity with AWS cloud-native design patterns, IAM, and VPC security configurations
- Exposure to integrating Claude into developer workflows (e.g., Claude Code, Bedrock-backed tooling) for engineering productivity
- Experience working in a Tech Lead capacity or supporting team mentorship
- Familiarity with Bedrock's enterprise features: CloudWatch metrics, OIDC/SSO integration, cross-region inference profiles
