Responsibilities

Lead Hand

Daily Dispatch of city and highway drivers
Monitor the health & safety program and compliance
Coordination with the Operations Manager of all vacation timing and schedule for all drivers
Daily driver supervision, coordinating and scheduling drivers and equipment to meet daily demands in a timely fashion
Working with customers daily to ensure efficient operations and planning
Training of drivers and driver ride-a-longs
Conduct monthly shop and equipment inspections
Review and submit all pertinent paperwork daily
Other related duties as required or assigned
To provide superior performance based on the following criteria:

Driver Activities

Safe and efficient operation of bulk transport vehicle.
Adhere to safety practices and procedures.
Adhere to Dairy Industry Act and Regulations.
Fuel vehicle, check oil, and report required repairs/maintenance.
Maintain logbooks/records on mileage, report all accidents and turn in paperwork in a timely manner.
Load truck with minimal to no product loss.
Unload truck with minimal to no product loss.
Cleaning exterior and inside the tanks of bulk milk trucks.
Maintain excellent attendance along with clean work habits.
Climb ladders to the top of the bulk tanks to check tank levels and for cleanliness.
Perform other duties as required.

You are responsible for your own behaviour on the road and inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated. When placed in a compromising situation, contact a supervisor.

On-The-Job Performance. We each have multiple tasks to perform during on-duty time. It is your responsibility to ensure that the tasks assigned to your position are being completed and in a timely manner. (Examples include making sure reefer temperature settings are correct for the type of product being hauled; making sure reefer does not run out of fuel, etc.).

Knowledge

The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas

Knowledge of truck, equipment, and employee safety
Basic knowledge of MS Office and Excel
Supervisory experience an asset
Knowledge of industry and profession
Knowledge of logbooks
Experience as a Class 1 driver
Unstable load experience
Electronic Logging Devices

Education

The incumbent would normally attain the required knowledge and skills through completion of grade 12 educations and obtaining a class 1 driver’s license and completing an accredited driving program.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands

The Lead Hand will spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers, which can cause muscle strain. The Lead Hand will also have to do some lifting of supplies and materials from time to time. Associated to driving climbing, lifting, pulling, sitting for long periods of time and managing awkward objects are required. While performing driving duties the lead hand will need to be prepared to work in all weather conditions.

Environmental Conditions

The incumbent is located in a busy, open office area. The incumbent is faced with constant interruptions and must meet with others. They must work outside in all weather conditions. The Lead Hand may encounter noise, vibration, poor weather conditions or heavy traffic that may cause physical stress for the driver. When on a customer’s property there may be icy, muddy, wet conditions in and around buildings. The Lead Hand receives a cell phone and may be required to be on call .

Sensory Demands

The incumbent may spend moderate hours in intense concentration. The incumbent may also spend moderate hours on the computer creating information which requires attention to detail and high levels of accuracy.
