Job Summary

The Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education at East Tennessee State University seeks a 9-month, tenure track Assistant Professor of Math Education position beginning August 2027 to teach in-person, online, and/or hybrid courses on the main campus in Johnson City and at the ETSU-Sevierville campus in teacher educator programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful applicant will teach undergraduate mathematics methods courses in the elementary education program which has seen a 25% increase in enrollment over the past two years. At the graduate level, the successful applicant may teach in the Master of Arts in Teaching and/or Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction programs, both of which have experienced over a 30% increase in enrollment in the past year. In addition to teaching, candidates are expected to engage in research and scholarly activities and in service to the department, college, university, and profession. The typical annual workload is 60% teaching, 20% research, and 20% service. The successful applicant may also supervise teacher candidates in the field.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Ability and willingness to teach face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses at two locations.
Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
Hold a commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda appropriate to the mathematics education discipline.
Ability to work with diverse populations and perspectives of students, faculty, and staff in support of the college’s and university’s mission.

Required Qualifications

Earned terminal degree (EdD or PhD) in Mathematics Education, Elementary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or similar field with a concentration in math or STEM; ABD will be considered with degree awarded by August 13, 2027
Minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in mathematics or mathematics education courses

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching mathematics in grades K-8, especially K-5, in a U.S. school setting
Experience supervising and/or mentoring pre-service student teacher candidates, especially in K-5 field placements
Experience teaching face-to-face and online education courses, especially in mathematics education, at the university level
Experience developing online education courses, especially mathematics education courses, at the university level
Demonstrated potential to secure external research funding

Compensation & Benefits
