Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the lab supervisor, the phlebotomist will obtain blood specimens and collect non blood specimen, review lab requisitions and prepare specimen for analysis, may also perform various screening tests. The phlebotomist is to maintain a cooperative working relationship with patients, patients' families, medical staff and interdepartmental and intradepartmental staff.
Essential Functions
- Check the test requisition or computer label , assure correctness and completeness prior to collecting samples.
- Done with 100% accuracy.
- Performs venipuncture technique on adults, newborns, and pediatric patients. Using vacutainer needles, butterfly needles with adaptors and heel/finger sticks.
- Able to successfully draw 100% of the patients assigned.
- Accession specimens in the lab information computer.
- 100 % accuracy on all information entered.
- Placement of specimens in appropriate pick up area for Central Accessioning.
- 100% of all specimens collected and verified are delivered to Central Accessioning/Labs for processing.
- Maintains supplies in laboratory.
- Ensure that there are adequate supplies to maintain the department's operation.
- Answer telephone calls; answer general questions concerning test orders, take messages or route calls.
- Ensure customer service.
- Responsible for performing proper Infection Control Procedures. As well as maintaining the regular quality control procedures in accordance with the departments procedure and testing schedule.
- 100% of all procedures performed must meet OSHA and hospital/MMG infectious disease standards.
- Train others in phlebotomy techniques when required and assist in the orientation of new associates.
- Orientation assignments are met thoroughly and on a timely basis. Effective training.
- Maintain required logs and records.
- 100% compliance.
- Receive daily work assignments from supervisor or designee and perform duties according to established standards.
- 100% compliance with the policies and procedures of the department.
- Attend in-service and staff meetings as required.
- 100% compliance.
- Follow established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
- 100% compliance.
- Alerts supervisor to defective equipment.
- All defective equipment is reported immediately to ensure quick repair or replacement for continued patient care.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- 100% compliance.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency is required
- Previous experience as a phlebotomist
- Basic Life Support Certification
