About The Role

We are seeking a part time Project Policy Analyst to work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) on resarch releated to health and incarceration. Specifically, this work will support a new National Insitute of Nursing Resaerch R01, the CARE study, focused on undestanding care and decision making for hospitalized incarcerated patients. Reporting to the Principal Inviestigator, the candidate will work with the team to engage in all stages of the research process to generate evidence that will inform policy recommendations. Activities will include overseeing the operations for qualitative and quantative data collection and analysis, as well as coordiantion across multiple instutitons and organizations. The candidate will maintain study databases, assess for quality control and data cleaning, participate in data analysis and engage in select aspects of data collection in order to develop content expertise. The candidate will help to support community researchers and will coordinate data collection among the multiple members of the research team. They will assist with organizing and running team meetings for concurrent analysis and will assist with manuscript preparation and dissemination of findings, including creating and updating newsletters and websites for external audiences. They will also support the development of grant applications and performing other study-related operational/administrative tasks to ensure study and team success.

The ideal candidate would have prior experience in qualitative and mixed methods research. In addition, experience with research in health equity and/or incarceration. A successful candidate is highly collaborative, mission-driven, highly organized and able to prioritize multiple deadlines and competing tasks. Working with vulnerable participants and data on sensitive topics requires utmost discretion and confidentiality.

Department Overview

This research is housed in the Institute for Health and Aging and the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the UCSF School of Nursing. The UCSF Institute for Health and Aging (IHA) was established as the Aging Health Policy Center by the School of Nursing in 1979 to foster multidisciplinary collaborative research, education, and public service in the fields of health policy and aging. In 1985, the Institute became an Organized Research Unit of the University of California and was re-designated as the IHA. Faculty at the Institute represent multiple disciplines and health professions, including sociology, psychology, anthropology, political science, economics, public administration, public health, social work, nursing, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and law. The research mission of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences is 1) to advance knowledge in nursing health policy and in sociology through theoretically-informed, methodologically rigorous qualitative and quantitative research; and 2) to examine the broad dynamics of health, healing, and the production of knowledge and technologies and their applications in these domains with special focus on inequalities.

Applies professional or research concepts to perform analysis of data and systems pertaining to moderately complex projects, policies, initiatives, / processes, and / or functions. Coordinates project planning and collaboration with program / project staff.

On a project basis, performs analytical studies on a variety of policies, research initiatives, programs and issues.

Overseeing the operations for qualitative and quantative data collection and analysis, as well as coordiantion across multiple instutitons and organizations.

Gathers and assembles analytical and factual data on assigned problems and issues to prepare reports and / or analyses summarizing information on the assigned issues and commenting on other significance for internal or external constituents.

Supports the research team in gathering, organizing and maintaining study data and resources.

Maintain study databases, assess for quality control and data cleaning, participate in data analysis and engage in select aspects of data collection in order to develop content expertise.

Assists in the conception, formulation, conduct and dissemination of findings from research projects, including conducting literature reviews; assist with grant preparation and submission, creation of data summaries/narratives; oversee the processing of protocols for IRB applications.

Performing other study-related operational/administrative tasks to ensure study and team success.

  • Prepares, edits and modifies documents including study materials, operating procedures, research reports, manuscripts, presentations and proposals.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 1 year of related experience.
  • Working knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Demonstrates ability to analyze, research and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
  • Proficient in ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Excellent word processing and spreasheet skills
  • Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Proficient in ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Prior experience with research recruitment and collaborating with clinical and community-based teams
  • Ability to interface with and work well in a culturally sensitive manner with diverse communities in the context of community-based research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a health care or social scientific field (e.g., MPH, MS, MA)
  • Working knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques.
  • Demonstrates ability to analyze, research and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of applicable qualitative and policy data analysis techniques.
  • Working knowledge of UCSF systems (including MyExpense, BearBuy, IRB, etc)
  • Training or experience in social sciences field (e.g., public health, sociology, anthropology, health policy).
  • Personal, academic, or professional experience around incarceration
  • Personal, academic, or professional experience around health equity.
  • Experience working in or supporting research within a healthcare setting or experience and familiarity with healthcare or health policy.
