Emergency Medicine Physician (ED/Hospitalist) – SEARHC

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary Range 0.5 - 0.75 FTE: $194,400 - $302,400 annual salary
  • Financial Incentives 0.75 FTE: Geographical differential stipend of $26,500, $26,250 Sign-on bonus and $18,750 relocation assistance available.

Schedule and Work-Life Balance

  • Schedule : Flexible shift-based model with one-week blocks, covering days and evenings.
  • Shift Obligation: 0.5 FTE: 9 shifts monthly & 0.75 FTE 14 shifts monthly
  • Day shift: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Evening shift: 4:00 PM – 12:00 AM including overnight call to 8am.
  • Call structure: 7 night calls monthly from 12:00 AM – 8:00 AM (not required to be onsite).
  • Call Back Rate: $270 per hour

Practice Details

  • Wrangell Medical Center: Critical Access Hospital with a 4-bed ED and 8-bed inpatient unit
  • Variable Patient volume:
  • ED census: ~3 patients/day
  • Inpatient census: ~1 patient/day
  • Rehab census: ~3 patients/day
  • Scope of care: Full-spectrum care including emergency, inpatient, and acute rehab patients across all ages
  • Telehealth integration: Supports regional urgent care telehealth when not engaged in direct patient care

Clinical Resources & Support

  • Clinic & hospital infrastructure: 2 trauma bays, 2 flex ED rooms, 8 inpatient beds, and adjacent LTC/clinic services
  • Support staff: 3 RNs onsite per shift (ED/MS/LTC), on-call lab and imaging 24/7
  • Imaging: X-ray and CT available 24/7; additional access to mammography, ultrasound, and DEXA
  • Technology: Meditech EHR
  • Specialty access: Tele-stroke program and telemedicine consultations; additional services available at SEARHC regional facilities

Qualifications

  • MD or DO with completion of an accredited residency in Family Medicine, Med/Peds, or Emergency Medicine
  • Board-certified or board-eligible
  • Eligible for Alaska medical licensure
  • Required certifications: ACLS, ALSO, ATLS, BLS, NRP, and PALS

Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job

  • Provides appropriate clinical health care services to the emergency room patients of Wrangell Medical Center. Care includes evaluations, clinical analysis, and recommendation and delivery of complex therapies and treatments. Includes delivery of health care services to patients of all ages, including newborn, infant, child, adolescent, pregnant, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Practices comprehensive medical care to outpatients and inpatients, including evaluations, clinical analysis, treatment recommendation, and preventive health care. This includes delivery of health services to patients of all ages and may include the practice of obstetrics.
  • Serves as consultative liaison to village health care providers and referral physicians throughout Southeast Alaska.
  • Participate in all medical staff functions as requested, to include quality assurance reviews and meetings. Serve as chief of service as assigned by the medical director, providing clinical leadership to the service and collaborating with other hospital and corporate staff who work within the service.
  • Abide by medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations, and clinical services policies/procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to gather and analyze information and use it to make appropriate clinical diagnosis and therapeutic decisions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of allopathic theories and therapies.
  • Specialized knowledge applicable to emergency medicine, such as airway and trauma management.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Clinical judgment skills to assess complex situations and make appropriate clinical decisions.
  • Skills appropriate for emergencies, such as intubation skills and cardiac resuscitation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to order diagnostic tests effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to work as the sole provider, with the support of other physicians.
