The PhD position is part of the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network ‘MicroMan4Health’ on Data-Centric Micromanufacturing Platform Towards Added Value in the Health Sector ( https://www.microman4health.eu/ ).
The PhD project is anchored at the Section of Manufacturing Engineering of the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, where important societal challenge of increasing sustainability of production (both environmental and economical) sets the overall vision for the work in the section. This in particular involves adopting the Industry 4.0 framework and establishing the digital twin of manufactured products by the combination of process monitoring by sensors and process modelling,
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall purpose will be to develop a fully digitalized, data-driven micromanufacturing process chain for fabrication of thermoplastic microfluidic diagnostic systems by integrating micro 3D printing (µ3DP) with micro injection molding (µIM) into a unified digital manufacturing cell. The work focuses on creating digital dataflows linking µ3DP, µIM, simulation tools, and optical quality control, enabling high-precision polymer soft tooling and real-time process monitoring.
You will work at the intersection of experimental polymer processing, micro engineering, digital manufacturing and simulation technologies for biomedical analytics applications. Through close collaboration with dedicated industrial and academic partners, you will generate new scientific insights and deliver actionable results that enable industrial implementation of micro additive manufacturing and micro injection molding solutions.
Your primary tasks will be to integrate µ3DP and µIM into a digital micromanufacturing process chain and develop complete digital dataflows between all subsystems. You will enable µ3DP fabrication of soft tools using a µIM digital twin and formulate Design for Micromanufacturing rules. Furthermore, you will implement in situ process monitoring and analyze real-time sensor data, while optimizing processing parameters using modelling and data-driven approaches.
The position also involves validating models through iterative comparison with experiments and uncertainty quantification, as well as contributing to the integration and demonstration of the developed process at industrial partners
To succeed in this role, you must have a strong foundation in materials processing, polymer materials, or manufacturing technologies, as well as experience with experimental laboratory work and data analysis. An interest in numerical simulation and/or process modelling is also required. Furthermore, you should be able to work independently while collaborating effectively in a multidisciplinary and international environment. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, are essential.
Important note = MSCA Eligibility – Mobility Rule
Please note that this PhD position is funded under the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Actions (MSCA). Therefore, applicants must not have resided in Denmark or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date.
Short stays such as holidays, compulsory national service, or time spent as part of a refugee procedure are not considered.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, polymer engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms

The period of employment is 3 years.
Starting date is 1 March 2027 or according to mutual agreement. The position is a full-time position.
