Services include settlement, employment, family, language and community programs. Job Summary
The Case Manager plays a critical role in supporting the settlement and integration of immigrants, refugees, and other newcomers by providing personalized, holistic case management services. This position focuses on empowering clients to overcome barriers, access essential resources, and develop skills that promote long-term self-sufficiency. Through advocacy, coordination, and direct service delivery, the Case Manager ensures that clients receive the support needed to thrive socially, economically, and culturally in Canada.
Key Responsibilities
Client Intake, Assessment, and Planning
- Conduct detailed, trauma-informed intake interviews to assess client backgrounds, needs, strengths, and goals.
- Develop customized settlement plans, outlining steps and resources needed for successful integration.
- Prioritize urgent needs such as housing, legal assistance, health services, and crisis intervention while creating pathways for long-term goals.
- Identify potential risk factors (e.g., mental health challenges, domestic violence, isolation) and provide appropriate referrals.
- Establish trust-based, empathetic relationships with clients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Case Management and Service Coordination
- Provide ongoing, client-centered case management, ensuring that clients receive consistent, coordinated services throughout their settlement journey.
- Conduct home visits to provide essential housing information to ensure clients understand lease agreements and tenancy laws.
- Liaise with internal departments (language services, employment, housing) and external partners (government agencies, NGOs, healthcare providers) to streamline referrals and access to services.
- Collaborate with social workers, counselors, and employment advisors to provide wrap-around support.
- Regularly monitor and evaluate client progress, adjusting settlement plans as needed to reflect evolving goals and circumstances.
- Advocate on behalf of clients to address systemic barriers, secure services, and collaborate with colleagues to resolve conflicts with landlords, employers, or service providers.
- Coordinate multiple services to address complex needs, such as trauma recovery, education, and legal support.
Client Empowerment and Skills Development
- Provide individual coaching sessions to enhance client skills in navigating Canadian systems (e.g., healthcare, education, transportation, employment, etc.)
- Support clients with internal or external referrals for credential recognition, career planning, and accessing professional development or language training.
- Encourage and promote self-advocacy, independence, and informed decision-making among clients.
- Develop peer support networks and mentorship opportunities that foster community connections.
Documentation & Administration
- Maintain detailed client records, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with organizational policies and privacy legislation.
- Track client interactions, referrals, and program outcomes using agency databases and reporting systems.
- Support agency reporting by sharing success stories, program challenges, and accurate client data.
- Submit purchase requests, receipts and financial claims to the designated approvers.
- Ensure strict adherence to confidentiality, code of ethics and all other professional codes of conduct
- Work collaboratively as part of the CVIMS team to ensure agency and client success
- Follow CVIMS protocols for reporting and communication
- Participate in all staff meetings, training sessions and professional development opportunities.
- And such further duties and responsibilities as may be communicated by CVIMS from time to time.
Required Education, Certifications, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Community Development, Psychology, or a related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to build trust and rapport across diverse populations. Excellent spoken and written English required.
- Training in trauma-informed care and / or experience working with vulnerable populations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating a high level of professionalism and integrity.
- Vulnerable sector criminal record check on file with CVIMS required
- Training or demonstrated proficiency using client databases, Microsoft Office 365, Zoom, Teams, and other digital tools
Preferred Skills, Abilities, and Assets
- Certification in Case Management, Settlement Work, or Social Work (CCSW, CCM, or equivalent) is preferred.
- Valid class 5 driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred.
- GBA+ certification is an asset.
- Fluency in a second language would be an asset.
- Priority will be given to applicants who are eligible to work in Canada for minimum 3 years.

Additional Information
- Travel within Nanaimo Regional District and surrounding region will be required. Occasional travel to locations in other parts of British Columbia and/or Canada for purposes like professional development, networking, program delivery or conferences may also be required
- Some work outside of regular office hours, including evenings and weekends, will be required. Flex time schedules will be made to accommodate non-regular work hours. This position is eligible for overtime in accordance with the BC Employment Standards Act. All overtime must be approved in advance.
- This is a temporary term contract position with the possibility of extension based on operational needs.
