Data Science / AI / Machine LearningExternal listingfull-timeabout 2 hours ago

About The Role

  • Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane Location
  • Hybrid Working Model
  • Excellent Career Development Platform

What is the role?

Join Westpac’s Data, Digital and AI ( DDAI ) community and build practical data science capability on work that matters. You’ll help turn complex data into insight, test ideas responsibly, and contribute to solutions that improve customer experience, strengthen decision-making and support better operational outcomes across a large, regulated enterprise.

This is a hands-on role, and you’ll explore data, write code, test hypotheses, document findings and contribute model components under guidance. You’ll also learn how strong experimentation becomes reliable delivery in a corporate environment where governance, risk, privacy and production readiness matter as much as technical curiosity.

You’ll work in a hybrid cloud landscape with a predominantly Microsoft-aligned toolset, partnering with data scientists, engineers, platform teams and business specialists. Success will come from combining technical curiosity with strong interpersonal skills, clear communication and the ability to build trust with stakeholders in a complex corporate environment.

The impact you can make

  • Contribute analysis and model components that help teams make better, evidence-based decisions.
  • Build practical capability in responsible AI, model risk, cloud delivery and stakeholder communication.
  • Learn from experienced practitioners through pairing, code review, feedback, and structured development.
  • See how customer, risk and operational context change the way data science is designed and delivered.

What you’ll be doing

  • Use Python and SQL to clean, explore and analyse structured or unstructured data, then turn findings into clear recommendations that business and technology teams can understand and act on.
  • Understanding core statistics and machine learning concepts, including data preparation, feature engineering, evaluation, and overfitting.
  • Bring evidence that you have built something yourself, such as an analysis, model, application or data product, and can clearly explain the choices you made, the trade-offs you considered and what you learned.
  • Curiosity about cloud-based data science with solid exposure to Azure ML, Dataiku, Power BI, Tableau, Git or similar tools.
  • A learning mindset, attention to detail and willingness to seek feedback.
  • Communicate clearly, listen actively, ask thoughtful questions and build respectful working relationships with peers, stakeholders and business partners.
  • A degree can be helpful, but it is not the only pathway into this role. We value practical evidence, curiosity, learning agility and the ability to keep growing in a supportive team environment.

What do I need?

  • Experience working in a corporate, financial services, consulting, technology or similarly complex environment will be highly regarded, particularly where you have had to balance technical delivery with stakeholder expectations, governance, risk, privacy or operational constraints.
  • Use Python and SQL to clean, explore, and analyse structured or unstructured data.
  • Create reproducible exploratory analysis, features, visualisations and baseline models.
  • Assist with model selection, testing, validation, documentation, and performance evaluation.
  • Contribute to experiments involving machine learning, forecasting, optimisation, NLP or GenAI where appropriate.
  • Use version control and team delivery practices to make work reviewable and reusable.
  • Partner with engineers to understand deployment, APIs, pipelines, monitoring and support requirements.
  • You present findings simply, ask good questions, adapt quickly to feedback and build credibility with stakeholders by explaining technical work in plain language.
  • Handle data with care and follow privacy, security, responsible AI and model risk requirements, recognising that good data science in a corporate environment must be explainable, ethical, secure and trusted.
