About The Role

The PRN Operating Room Registered Nurse provides as-needed professional nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures in the operating room. This role delivers direct patient care in accordance with physician orders, perioperative nursing standards, and established clinical protocols, including patient assessment, intraoperative support, and evaluation of patient outcomes. The PRN OR RN supports surgical services on a variable schedule, based on case volume and operational demand, while upholding MSRH's mission, vision, and values. Work is performed under the supervision of nursing leadership and in collaboration with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and the interprofessional health care team. The PRN role requires flexibility to work variable shifts, including on-call coverage and call-back as needed.

  • Perform preoperative patient assessments and verify readiness for surgical procedures.
  • Provide intraoperative nursing care in accordance with physician orders, perioperative standards, and clinical protocols.
  • Function in the circulating role and support scrub activities as appropriate within scope of practice.
  • Maintain a safe and sterile surgical environment throughout procedures.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and the surgical team to support efficient case flow.
  • Monitor patient status during procedures and respond appropriately to changes in condition.
  • Ensure proper handling of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Participate in surgical counts and verify accuracy of instruments, sponges, and supplies.
  • Accurately document patient care, procedures, and outcomes in the electronic medical record.
  • Support patient throughput by assisting with room turnover and preparation for subsequent procedures.
  • Comply with all regulatory, infection control, safety, and quality standards.
  • Participate in emergency situations as required within the operating room setting.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned based on operational needs.
  • Working knowledge of perioperative nursing principles, surgical procedures, and operating room protocols.
  • Perform patient assessments and provide safe, effective care throughout the perioperative process.
  • Ability to maintain a sterile and safe surgical environment in collaboration with the surgical team.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nursing staff, patients, and families.
  • Apply critical thinking and clinical judgment in time-sensitive surgical environments.
  • Prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced operating room setting.
  • Function independently and exercise sound judgment within scope of practice.
  • Document patient care accurately using the electronic medical record.
  • Ability to comply with regulatory, safety, infection control, and perioperative standards.
  • Adapt to variable schedules, case complexity, and changing surgical demands typical of PRN assignments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing patient-centered care consistent with the mission, vision, and values of MSRH.
