About The Role
REPORTS TO: Operations Manager
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Daily Operations Supervision
- Supervise the day-to-day waste receiving, handling, compaction, loading and evacuation activities at the Transfer Station.
- Ensure operational activities are carried out in accordance with approved procedures, schedules and performance requirements.
- Coordinate the deployment of operational personnel to ensure adequate coverage across all shifts and work areas.
- Monitor daily work activities and address operational challenges promptly.
- Escalate significant operational issues, delays and risks to the Operations Manager.
- Waste Receiving and Flow Management
- Supervise the orderly receipt and movement of municipal solid waste within the Transfer Station.
- Ensure waste is directed to the appropriate receiving, handling and processing areas.
- Monitor waste volumes and flow to prevent congestion and unnecessary delays.
- Coordinate with relevant teams to ensure the timely loading and evacuation of consolidated waste.
- Support the identification and reporting of prohibited or inappropriate waste entering the facility.
- Equipment and Vehicle Coordination
- Coordinate the operational deployment of loaders, compactors, trucks, trailers and other equipment.
- Ensure equipment and vehicles are used efficiently and in accordance with approved operating procedures.
- Conduct routine checks to identify obvious equipment defects or operational concerns.
- Report equipment faults, breakdowns and maintenance requirements promptly to the appropriate technical team.
- Minimise operational downtime by coordinating effectively with the Technical Manager and other relevant departments.
- Staff Supervision and Performance Management
- Provide direct supervision, guidance and direction to operators, drivers, factory hands and other assigned operational personnel.
- Allocate daily tasks and monitor attendance, punctuality and work performance.
- Ensure employees understand their duties, performance expectations and operational procedures.
- Conduct daily operational briefings and toolbox meetings where required.
- Support the Operations Manager in addressing performance, discipline and productivity issues.
- Operational Safety and Compliance
- Ensure operational activities are carried out in compliance with approved safety procedures and company policies.
- Monitor the interaction between personnel, heavy equipment, trucks and other vehicles within the facility.
- Ensure employees use appropriate PPE and follow safe work practices.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses and operational hazards promptly.
- Work closely with the Head of Safety to support the implementation of safety controls and corrective actions.
- Housekeeping and Facility Standards
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping, cleanliness and orderliness within assigned operational areas.
- Ensure waste spillage, litter and other operational residues are promptly addressed.
- Monitor conditions that may contribute to odour, dust, pests, congestion or other operational concerns.
- Ensure work areas, access routes and operational zones remain clear and functional.
- Support environmentally responsible waste-handling practices.
- Shift and Resource Coordination
- Coordinate operational activities during assigned shifts.
- Ensure the effective deployment of personnel, equipment and other operational resources.
- Monitor workload distribution and recommend adjustments where necessary.
- Ensure proper handover of operational information between shifts.
- Maintain continuity of operations and minimise disruptions during shift changes.
- Operational Records and Reporting
- Maintain accurate daily operational records, including waste received, waste evacuated, equipment utilisation and key operational activities.
- Prepare daily and shift reports for submission to the Operations Manager.
- Report operational incidents, delays, equipment breakdowns and other significant issues.
- Monitor assigned operational KPIs and identify areas requiring improvement.
- Provide relevant data and information to support management reporting and performance reviews.
- Problem-Solving and Continuous Improvement
- Identify operational bottlenecks, inefficiencies and recurring challenges.
- Recommend practical improvements to enhance waste flow, productivity and operational efficiency.
- Support the implementation of approved operational improvement initiatives.
- Follow up on assigned corrective actions and ensure timely completion.
- Promote accountability, discipline and continuous improvement among operational teams.
ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
Ideal Profile
The Operations Supervisor should ensure that daily Transfer Station operations are properly coordinated, safe, efficient and well controlled. The role should maintain a smooth flow of waste from receipt through handling and consolidation to final evacuation, while ensuring effective workforce supervision, optimal utilisation of operational resources and compliance with approved procedures and safety requirements.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Operations Management, Engineering, Logistics, Environmental Management, Waste Management or a related discipline.
- 3–5 years of relevant operational experience, including at least 1–2 years in a supervisory role.
Industry Experience
Waste management, logistics, transport, manufacturing, heavy industry, construction or similar operational environments.
Technical Knowledge
Waste-handling operations, shift supervision, equipment and vehicle coordination, operational planning, workforce deployment, waste-flow management, housekeeping standards, operational reporting, KPI monitoring and basic safety procedures.

- Strong leadership and people management: Ability to effectively supervise, direct and motivate operational teams.
- Decision-making and problem-solving: Ability to respond promptly and practically to daily operational challenges.
- Planning and organisational skills: Ability to coordinate people, equipment and activities effectively across assigned shifts.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: Ability to communicate instructions clearly and work effectively with operational and support teams.
