About The Role
Summary
The student tutor conducts one-on-one or small group tutorial sessions on career readiness, professional development, LinkedIn, AI, online presence basics, and career exploration through peer conversations. The student tutor tutors a diverse population of undergraduate students in the Peer Tutoring Lab. The peer tutor works in the Lab in-person a minimum of 10 hours per week, Mondays through Fridays.
Essential Functions
- Provides one-on-one and small-group tutorial services to a diverse population of undergraduate juniors and seniors. The tutor:
- Identifies students’ career readiness needs.
- Differentiates strategies and instructional materials to meet individual students’ needs.
- Assists students in career exploration and communicating with faculty mentors.
- Engages students in tutoring sessions by utilizing active learning strategies.
- Motivates students by being an active listener.
- Provides positive feedback and makes recommendations for further career exploration and goal setting.
- Respects students’ diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives.
- Documents student work and progress by:
- Using the processes and systems established within the Content-Area Tutoring Center to document student progress.
- Entering all data in a timely fashion as specified by the Glenn Hubert Learning Center’s Manager.
- Communicating with the Glenn Hubert Learning Center’s Manager regarding students with challenging or unique situations and documenting record details of such situations through the specified means within the Content-Area Tutoring Center.
- Participates in professional development and training sessions as related to tutor responsibilities. The tutor:
- Maintains currency in the area of career development by collaborating with faculty mentors and 3rd year academic success coaches.
- Actively participates in learning community meetings.
- Participates in mandatory training sessions throughout the semester.
- Maintains currency with technological resources for instructional and recordkeeping purposes.
- Monitors and makes arrangements for replenishment of consumable materials used in the tutoring environment.
- Develops and facilitates workshop/short videos related to career development.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Must work a minimum of 10 hours per week consistently.
- Must be able to work for at least two semesters consecutively.
- Must possess excellent communication skills.
- Must be punctual, organized, professional, and courteous.
- Must have earned a grade of “A” in the PSY 335 and PSY 436 classes.
- Must be currently enrolled as a Barry University student.
- Has a current 3.5 GPA.
- Has a professional faculty recommendation letter from the biology department.
- Good academic standing.
