Riley Children's Health is seeking a collaborative and engaged Assistant Nurse Manager to support our 24-bed General Surgery, Trauma, and Gastrointestinal (GI) Unit , which also includes a dedicated treatment room. This leadership role offers an exciting opportunity to partner with an experienced nurse manager in advancing exceptional pediatric patient care while supporting a highly skilled interdisciplinary team.
This position offers a flexible full-time schedule with opportunities to maintain clinical visibility through off-shift rounding (approximately 4-8 hours per week) and participation in a rotational weekend and holiday call schedule.

The General Surgery, Trauma, and GI Unit provides specialized care for pediatric patients requiring acute and complex surgical and gastrointestinal treatment. Position Summary
The Assistant Nurse Manager of Clinical Operations combines strong clinical expertise with contemporary leadership practices and the principles of the IU Health Way to achieve exceptional patient, team member, and organizational outcomes.
Working in partnership with the Unit Manager, this leader is accountable for developing, implementing, and evaluating action plans focused on:
- Quality and patient safety outcomes
- Clinical excellence and evidence-based practice
- Team member engagement and professional development
- Patient and family experience
- Care affordability and operational performance
- Regulatory and accreditation readiness
The Assistant Nurse Manager plays a key role in leading daily operations, fostering a culture of accountability, and creating an environment where nurses and interdisciplinary team members are empowered to achieve excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with the Unit Manager to oversee clinical and operational performance of a 24/7 pediatric specialty unit.
- Lead and support quality, safety, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Monitor key performance indicators and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented action plans.
- Serve as a visible and approachable leader through routine staff engagement and off-shift rounding.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, retention, and professional development of nursing team members.
- Promote evidence-based practice, professional nursing standards, and a culture of continuous learning.
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary partners to improve patient outcomes and care delivery.
- Assist with staffing coordination, resource management, and operational decision-making for a unit operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Foster a positive work environment focused on teamwork, inclusion, accountability, and excellence.
Qualifications
- Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree required.
- Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
- Required Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
- Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
- 3+ years of nursing experience preferred.
- Previous charge nurse, team lead, preceptor, or formal leadership experience preferred.
